Windows not movable / no close button / etc

Post by boowho »

Running Mint with Mate.... also installed compiz and cairo dock.

Have lost the ability to drag windows around, close and minimize/maximum buttons missing or don't respond, etc

Another issue is that windows all open in the top left corner of the screen!!

compiz AND cairo dock seem to work OK. What's going on here? Anyone??

Thanks in advance......

Boowho.... EXTREME noob

Hello boowho welcome to the Forum.
Please share your system info by going to:
Menu/System Reports/System Information/click "Copy"
and pasting it here.
(You can use the command inxi -Fxxxmprz on the Terminal.)

Open the compiz settings and look for "Window Decorations" and re-enable.
This setting occasionally gets reverted using compiz.
Also you can just temporarily change to another window manager,
then switch right back to compiz to reload.
Everything in life was difficult before it became easy.

Probably when you enabled Compiz
mate-control-center --> mate-tweak ( Mate Tweak ) --> Windows ( tab on left ) --> Window Manager
then
at the same time you did not have decorations enabled in Compiz.

How enable Window Decoration in ccsm ( in Compiz Settings ) ?
Just find " Window Decoration " in side " CompizConfig Settings Settings Manager "
and select / mark this . That's all

Edited
- Compiz is very advanced tool and not all options have to work together with others.
Please be careful because you may damage your settings.
Getting to know the Timeshift tool can be useful / recommended.
For example:
* Compiz keyboard shortcuts may conflict with in-game keyboard shortcuts.
* Certain settings may not work together.

- Compiz also working with Emerald. ( It's only info - you are a beginner so I do not recommend it )
It requires a special launch and I don't know if this is ready to use in Ubuntu-based distributions ( probably not )
This means that if you don't configure it, it may not work after restarting your computer
and you will have the problem again.
I don't know how to configure it.
I can only say that I have tested it now, it is working and I don't plan on using it later.
How to test Emerald ?
1. Open Emerald Manager ( emerald-theme-manager command in terminal )
2. Select with 2x left mouse click your best theme there.
3. In next window of terminal run command " emerald --replace "
Then you should see the new window decoration.
4. Probably You you will have to restore window close and minimize buttons.
Just in Emerald Theme select tab " Edit Themes "
then save settings ( just click Save button ) for tabs
- Frame Engine
- Buttons
- Frame/Shadows
- Titlebar
- Theme
Maybe I don't need save everything, I saved this just in case.
Defects: Because it is unconfigured,
( correction, I have this application in the menu, I don't seen before )
- closing the terminal will close this window decoration
- it will not start after restarting the computer
( Probably script is needed in side path $HOME/.config/autostart/
or in autostart settings, example https://www.cyberciti.biz/media/new/cms ... es_038.png )
How to restore " Window Decoration " from Compiz?
1. Close window with Emerald Manager and terminals with emerald.
2. In Compiz settings, just uncheck it again check / mark " Window Decoration "
Ready.

Honestly, Emerald Theme sometimes looks nice, maybe someone will improve it someday.

Also your boot partition is 95% full. That is not good.

And you have no Radeon driver:
AMD Mullins [Radeon R4/R5 Graphics] vendor: Dell driver: N/A
I would work to get that corrected - perhaps with a different kernel.

FWIW...... It appears to me that a substantial percentage of my issues disappear if I don't use Compiz

Boohoo??

Inside Linux Mint 21.3
Control Center --> " Look and Feel " ( tab on left ) --> " Desktops Settings " ( Open )
--> Windows ( tab on left ) --> Window Manager ( And here you can also change manager )

Default is set Marco + Compositing.

I mention this because this option is also there,
and "MATE Tweak" is not installed by default.
