Slow wifi issue on 2.4GHz Hotspot wifi in newer versions

Post by danishgec »

For the last 2 months I have been constantly trying to use Linux for my daily work on my personal Laptop (HP Probook 4430s 2011 model) and I first installed Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon Edition. The major issue I came across with it was that when I connected to Internet via Wifi Hotspot of my mobile phone, the speed was really slow (~10kbps) whereas no such issue ever came in Windows 10. I searched around the forums and found that Wifi 2.4 GHz frequency is not gettting good speeds in linux whereas 5 GHZ Wifi worked fine. Also there was a noticable lag in internet and sometimes the WiFi speeds would drop to zero all of a sudden. I tried everything that forums offered but it didn't work. I tried all of the major distros- Debian, Fedora, Arch, Manjaro, PuppyLinux, ZorinOS but issue remained the same - 2.4GHZ wifi speed was very slow.
Workaround
I remembered I had once tried Linux mint in 2020 and internet had worked fine the. So I installed the old version Linux mint 19.2 Tina which is currently unsupported and to my surprise the Wifi works seamlessly and very fast, rather faster than Windows 10.

I am guessing this is the issue with newer kernel or my wifi driver is not supported in newer versions. But I really want this issue to be sorted out so that I can use newer versions of Linux Mint.

Yeah, you described thoroughly your case but you missed the vital part of posting your system specs.

Ouch, Ralink cards are ... special ... at the best of times (and that's before we consider HP anti-consumer shenanigans). Best bet would be a cheapo USB adapter to just avoid the Ralink/HP mess.
