USB Keys are not recognized, dmesg says "device descriptor read/64, error -71"

Post by byjove01 »

Hi. My Linux Mint computer is unable to recognize any USB key I put on it for some reasons, unlike my external hard disks.
It's not just that I can't mount them, they're not even detected by lsblk whileas their "detection" LED is flashing.

When I check the log with dmesg, I got this error cycle:

I tried to apply an old advice I found on the internet by adding a file with options usbcore autosuspend=-1 to my /etc/modprobe.d folder but no matter the value I gave to the autosuspend variable, it didn't work.

If you want any information about my distribution, here it is.

No idea? I updated my distro several times but it didn't improve anything... I'd rather think it's my USB devices that are dying but they correctly work on my other Arch distro.

How many USB sticks did you try? Can it mount the Live Boot for your OS?

I would also boot the Live Boot and see if the problem shows there.

Probably 5 or 6 USB sticks. I can't mount my Live Boot media, because when I connect the stick to my PC while turning on, my screen freezes for some reasons until I remove the key. Could that be related to my hardware? I just can't understand why whole external HDDs work with no issues but not USB keys.

If you have USB HDD's connected, there might not be enough power for other USB devices

I connected each of them each in turn. I didn't put all of them in one single USB port or hub.

It looks like your using a USB hub. Disconnect it and try the usb key directly in the motherboard port. Also check bios has USB key listed as first boot device. After that I got nuthin. :D

I specified "key OR hub" in order to insist on how irrelevant this is to the issue, sadly... No matter if I connect directly the key or use a hub, the issue happens. At least I can confirm my computer has USB Key as first boot choice, but it doesn't work because of what I did talk about two posts earlier...

Execute
dmesg -w

Insert your USB stick and watch for error messages printed out

BTW a. you should have posted this on LMDE subforum b. LMDE5 is EoL.
