Ryzen APU not getting 60 fps in desktop
Hello all, I have an hp laptop with a 6880u, and only built in graphics.
I clean installed mint next to a windows 11 install on the same drive, and I have some weird behavior.
Sometimes, like when I come back from hibernation or the lock screen, my framerate drops and I get something like 24 fps, and I can see my cursor lagging and chugging.
I tried raising the limits with ryzenadj, I tried changing the governor to performance, I tried everything I could think off, nothing gets me smooth desktop experience. I am not talking gaming, this is a work laptop, but it is a beast, I did not expect to run into these issues.
This is also evident during video calls, the other side sees my video as choppy and not smooth.
I searched online, asked multiple llms and found nothing.
here's my information:

Re: Ryzen APU not getting 60 fps in desktop
I am mostly bumping this for you, but will make a few incidental comments that probably won't fix your problem.
I too am surprised you are having a problem.
If you added any applets you might want to experiment with removing those.
I too am surprised you are having a problem.
If it were me I would try to get 40+GB of that swap file to the OS partition (nvme0n1p5). 76% full is a bit much, but probably not your problem.Partition:
ID-1: / size: 130.48 GiB used: 99.11 GiB (76.0%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/nvme0n1p5
ID-2: /boot/efi size: 256 MiB used: 94.4 MiB (36.9%) fs: vfat dev: /dev/nvme0n1p1
Swap:
ID-1: swap-1 type: partition size: 65.58 GiB used: 216 KiB (0.0%) priority: -2
dev: /dev/nvme0n1p4
I am surprised that new of a computer is running at 65C.Sensors:
System Temperatures: cpu: 65.0 C mobo: 25.0 C gpu: amdgpu temp: 64.0 C
Fan Speeds (RPM): N/A
Well, OK. Use with care.grub-customizer
If you added any applets you might want to experiment with removing those.
Re: Ryzen APU not getting 60 fps in desktop
Having just spent quite a bit of time reading a long bug report about problems with AMD on Lenovos, it may be an issue that HP optimized the BIOS/UEFI for Windows. Do you have the most recent one installed?Undertaker666 wrote: ⤴Mon Mar 18, 2024 9:04 am Hello all, I have an hp laptop with a 6880u, and only built in graphics.

Why would you be making all those adjustments on a work PC (in addition to adding the kisak-ppa). Usually, only people interested in gaming are making all those tweaks.Undertaker666 wrote: ⤴Mon Mar 18, 2024 9:04 amI tried raising the limits with ryzenadj, I tried changing the governor to performance, I tried everything I could think off, nothing gets me smooth desktop experience. Re: Ryzen APU not getting 60 fps in desktop
I have 64GB of RAM, and when the swap was smaller, it would not load properly from hibernation. I am planning some changes to the Windows size to make a shared space so the Windows partition would be smaller. If it were me I would try to get 40+GB of that swap file to the OS partition (nvme0n1p5). 76% full is a bit much, but probably not your problem.
That's under a bit of load. It reaches 80+ under full load.I am surprised that new of a computer is running at 65C.
I never mentioned that, nor have I used that.grub-customizer
Yes, last time I checked.Do you have the most recent one installed?
Because as I mentioned, I can't get smooth video in meetings, so I thought it was some limit. Why would you be making all those adjustments on a work PC

The only reason I mentioned grub-customizer was because of this in Repos:Undertaker666 wrote: ⤴Tue Mar 19, 2024 2:11 am snip

I'm sorry to hear about your problem. You are not the only one reporting framerate drops.
Re: Ryzen APU not getting 60 fps in desktop
OP is running three large screens. More screens always drives up the temperature.
While you are in Windows, check the BIOS/UEFI version. HP makes a lot of models, but when I made a quick check I saw version 1.08 released this year with a number of fixes for it. (They don't support Linux-based distros with this model laptop, but sometimes fixes affect more than one operating system.)Undertaker666 wrote: ⤴Tue Mar 19, 2024 2:11 am I am planning some changes to the Windows size to make a shared space so the Windows partition would be smaller.

Did you take a Timeshift snapshot before making those changes so you can easily revert them?
You can try seeing if updating the amdgpu linux-firmware will help although it may be hard to tell with all the other tweaks you have already done. Instructions for upgrading the amdgpu linux-firmware are here. If you have questions about them, let us know.

Yeah, but never installed it once I read online about the issues with it.You installed the PPA for it
Sadly no.Did you take a Timeshift snapshot before making those changes so you can easily revert them?
trying that now, but won't that get updated when I run normal OS updates?amdgpu linux-firmware
Re: Ryzen APU not getting 60 fps in desktop
Not necessarily. Canonical has not been back-porting all the updates for linux-firmware which have been released. A number of people have needed to manually run this update to get fixes for issues.Undertaker666 wrote: ⤴Wed Mar 20, 2024 7:45 amtrying that now, but won't that get updated when I run normal OS updates?amdgpu linux-firmware

Tried the amdgpu firmware, it's better after raising the limits amp wise, but still not fluid.
Re: Ryzen APU not getting 60 fps in desktop
Does it take a while for your computer to boot? If it was me, I just wouldn't use suspend/hibernate. There are so many issues with that on Linux. It used to make sense in the days of mechanical hard disks and 30+ second boot times, but the systems I've been using for the last 5-10 years boot Linux so fast, it's not worth using suspend/hibernate if there are issues with it.

Re: Ryzen APU not getting 60 fps in desktop
The time is not the issue,.it the session I have to re open everything on fresh boot. And sometimes even on a clean boot it is a bit slow.
Re: Ryzen APU not getting 60 fps in desktop
Does it make a difference as to what and how many external monitors are attached?Undertaker666 wrote: ⤴Tue Mar 26, 2024 3:32 am Tried the amdgpu firmware, it's better after raising the limits amp wise, but still not fluid.
Are they attached to a docking station or directly to the laptop?
Here are all the open and closed bug reports on 6800U.
Did you update the BIOS/UEFI?

Re: Ryzen APU not getting 60 fps in desktop
The more monitors, the more I feel it, even though I felt it less with one 4K monitor vs. 2 1080p monitors.
I am on the latest bios version. the 2 monitors are from the usb4, and the one 4k is from the hdmi.

Re: Ryzen APU not getting 60 fps in desktop
Perhaps that relates to the number of ports in use by the GPU.Undertaker666 wrote: ⤴Tue Mar 26, 2024 2:55 pm The more monitors, the more I feel it, even though I felt it less with one 4K monitor vs. 2 1080p monitors.
You might want to try searching the bugs reports for the specific monitor (or type of monitor).
I recall seeing issues that relates to specific hardware functionality of the monitor, but I research so many issues/bug reports that I don't recall the specifics. I think for one the clock-rate after suspend went to a specific value (but only for certain types of monitors). Some of the issues get really nuanced as to what the triggers are.

That was the first thing I checked, clocks on the Graphics side, they always report as maxed, not matter the situation.
Usage graph also shows it fluctuating so it is not stuck on something.
