Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

Post by MurphCID »

I was struck with certain terminology differences between my generation and the newer ones, here are a few:

Programming vs Coding
Program vs Application aka "App"
Boot up vs Start up

What are some of the other differences you all have found?

I don;'t think programming vs coding is so new. Coders were always sorta wannabe programmers.

Some of it makes sense but some does not. Programming is much more descriptive than coding. Code means a system of symbols and arbitrary words used to represent a message for transmission. Coding is converting a message into code. Application is a word that was giving a new meaning thanks to mobile devices. It started there and then all of a sudden there were no more programs or software. Everything become an app.

While we are at it, programmer vs developer. I cringe at developer because I think of real estate developers. They buy land, develop it and then sell it. Programmer is a more appropriate name IMO.

I get Start Up vs Boot Up. Not many people know what a bootstrap is nor do they have any idea what it means.

If you want to confuse youngsters, ask them if they know why you "dial" a phone number. Then ask if they know where the dial is. I wager the expression on their innocent faces will be similar to the one a toddler has the first time someone plays 'I got your nose'.

A neighbor's kid lives to annoy and belittle "Boomers." A few weeks ago he inserted himself into a conversation between us Oldsters - we were explaining to one of the guys this thing called Reddit. Gen-XYZ quipped, "You would not understand, Boomer. It is social media." I responded with, "Usenet, only slightly better organized and somewhat more polite."

I remember 8 inch floppies.
At work we had to convert our 5.25 inch floppies to 3.5 inch floppies. Now no one uses floppy disks any more.
Using Mint as primary OS since 2006.

I still have a bunch of those. I need to let them all go, along with the other antique tech I have knocking about (except my old tools; tools are useful, no matter their age).

I can see several storage cases full of 5¼" disks (and some loose) from where I'm sitting (loft man-cave) .. most have been archived but I still need to do my C64 disks. There's even a still-sealed box of Maxell HD 5¼" disks on top of the shelf rack ..

Better not to ask how many floppy disk drives I have up here!

Remember them? I've always used them on my desktops. My new desktop's MOBO doesn't have a display that will display numeric error codes (thanks a lot for cheaping out, Giga - byte my ample asset  ). There are four little LEDs arranged in a tiny square that light up in sequence when everything is copacetic but it's a bit of a stretch for me to see them from where I sit. I put a little speaker in the new desktop and I get that reassuring single beep just before it posts (ironically, a single beep with no post would point to a memory refresh error). I had to go online to find a list of
the beep codes, though. Gigabyte, bless their hearts, didn't think it was necessary to include them in the MOBO's manual.
