Linux Mint 19 XFCE 32bit - How to be sure of its verification?

Post by PurpleGamingProgram »

Hello.

I am restoring older computers, and decided to find a Linux distribution that is suited for older hardware.

Learning about Linux Mint 19 XFCE, I needed a 32bit and found this ISO.

https://archive.org/details/linuxmint-19-xfce-32bit

However, I am cautious and want to verify it, but I am on a Windows OS. I have gpg4win to help check the files, but after that I am in need of those knowledgeable to perhaps walk me through the process. I am also unsure where to find the official sha256* files for this ISO, as 32bit was discontinued.

I do have the ISO on a bootable flash drive, but before any installations, I want to verify its legitimacy.

Thank you for your patience.

I think that you are wasting your time with Mint 19.
It has long past end of life - so no support - & I doubt if there are any up to date Browsers available for it either.

While Linux Mint discontinued 32 bit with Mint 19 - because Ubuntu had - the good news is that Mint is still available as 32 bit via LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition).
It can be downloaded from here, where you can also find additional information about it..

Thank you for the alternative.

Since I had put Mint19 on the usb, should I discard the iso completely and go for LMDE? (I am trying to focus on keeping everything light as possible, since the device I am reviving has been sitting in storage for years untouched, which is what drove my interest in XFCE 32-bit.)

And will flashing LMDE on the same USB as the previous Mint 19 iso cause any problems?

I certainly would not recommend using Mint 19.
If you make a bootable USB out of LMDE 6 over the Mint 19 that will be fine.

LMDE only comes with the Cinnamon desktop. That might make it a bit heavy on older equipment.
There are plenty of light weight 32 bit distributions available, 1 of them might well be a better choice than Mint.
Here are some suggestions..

Thank you for the list and for explaining the USB.

I am going to research each of them thoroughly.

I am interested in the independent distros featured on the list, but since I don't know much outside of the standard Debian and Mint, is it possible to provide a little background on AlpineOS, Q4OS, and VoidLinux? I am interested in security and distro security capabilities, as I am not planning to put an anti-virus due to the possibility of it degrading the safety of the Linux kernel. So hopefully, something with long-term support.

I haven't actually used any of the 32 bit small footprint distributions as I don't have that need :D
Anyway, here are some pointers..
AlpineOS
https://www.alpinelinux.org/about/
Q4OS
https://q4os.org/
VoidLinux
https://voidlinux.org/

Alpine comes in at number 29 in the DistroWatch page hit rankings & Q4OS comes just a couple later at number 31. Void is way down the list at number 94, but I was impressed with its' web page and documentation.
How long lasting are they? that is a difficult question but Q4OS is based on Debian so I imagine fairly easy to maintain and update.
All 3 stress security and stability in their introductions..

Thank you for your aid in this process.

For future documentation in case someone else discoverers the Iso file, these are the results of the Linux Distro in the link from the Internet Archive:

I am still trying to figure out how to do an authenticity check on windows for the Iso file, but I will be discarding it for a more up to date 32bit Distro.

You could try Sparkylinux LXGt, it works fine on my old 32 bit machines with just 2 GB of RAM. It's the third one down here: https://sparkylinux.org/download/oldstable/

Hello.

I also would like to know how to verify my download. The LMDE 6 torrent claims it is 2.5GB file but when I Download it I have 2.69GB file. I am randomly freezing and Internet turned of and on. Also system clock with not auto update stopping me from using the Internet as I need to update manually each day.

Thank You in advance!

I haven't used torrents for many years but I believe the file integrity is checked as part of the process (please someone coorect me if I'm wrong).

For the clock, have you set it to sync with the internet time servers? I remember that being an issue in the past.
