Here's what I've tried so far:
- First I copied the backgrounds in /usr/share/backgrounds/xfce/ into a "backgrounds" folder that I created in my home directory.
- Then in Desktop settings I change the folder from Desktop to backgrounds, click apply, and tick the "Change the background" box (in seconds).
- I close settings and then go back to the desktop, right click and choose "Next Background", and wait.
- When the background doesn't change I go back into settings and notice that the folder has changed back to Desktop.
What am I doing wrong?

Welcome to Mint forums
Pick Other... in the drop-down menu. It will open Thunar's file chooser. Find your custom folder and select it.
