One black screen after unlock (multi screen setup)

Post by simonmint »

I have a multi-screen setup with two monitors. When I lock the machine and unlock it, it happens that only on one of the two screens the windows become visible again. On the other screen, I can only see the cursor, but the remainder of the screen is black.
Locking the screen again and unlocking it does not help.
Changing the positions of the screen in the display settings resolves it.
However, this is only possible when the "main" monitor with access to the settings is properly unlocked.
It is the one that stays dark, not the chance of doing things.

I also face the issues described here https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon-s ... issues/424 occasionally.
Where the unlock screen is not showing, and I put in my password blind.
I am not sure if they are linked.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

I think they may be two different issues. Are the monitor numbers showing up correctly in the Display app?

Yes, most likely, these are two issues. My thinking was that they might be related. Thus, I mentioned I also experience the missing unlock screen occasionally.
For the display numbering showing in the Display settings app.
I don't see anything odd. The numbering in the location preview matches the shown in the corners of the monitors.
The numbering starts from 2 (DP2 and DP3) which is slightly odd as I only have two physical display port sockets. Not sure if this is to be expected.

That issue is with the Cinnamon screensaver. One does not usually have the Cinnamon screensaver running when they are using MATE like you are. The Cinnamon screensaver is for use with the Cinnamon desktop.

You posted in the Desktop:Cinnamon forum, but you are not running Cinnamon. The problem with the screen numbering only applies to those using Cinnamon 6.0.

I will move your topic to the Desktop:MATE forum.

With a 12th-gen Intel CPU, I recommend you upgrade to the 6.5 kernel available in Update Manager. That will provide a newer graphics driver and maybe that will help.

Instructions for upgrading to the 6.5 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 6.5 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
