hi,
I happened twice today,
I was just browsing internet in firefox and youtube in chrome, nothing hard, the desktop suddently locked itself like after a long time inactivity, and asked me for the root password. then I'm back to the desktop but all my browsers are closed, the first time this happened I had unsaved text in the text editor and I lost it.
What do you think is going on ?

It sounds to me like xserver is crashing. If you want to kill xserver on purpose typeWhat do you think is going on ?
<Ctrl><Alt><Backspace>
That is not something you normally want to do, and it is very rare for it to happen without you pressing <Ctrl><Alt><Backspace>. It has never happened on my system.

Re: Random reboot of desktop
it happened again right now, even if I restored an old timeshift backup (updated ofcourse).
here is the output of inxi -Fxxxmprz
The latest change I did in this computer is adding a graphics card (RTX 2080). I keps the opensource driver because I don't need GPU power on mint (I use it on windows 10)
Any idea ?
here is the output of inxi -Fxxxmprz

Re: Random reboot of desktop
When did this start? How long were you using mint before this problem started? Do you leave the system up all the time or only when needed? I started having this same issue a few weeks back after updating, and I see another post having similar issues from last month.

Re: Random reboot of desktop
I think the problem was using non nvidia drivers for my RTX, once installed, the problem where solved.
but this is a problem, I did not wanted to use proprietary software on my linux .
