Super+space to switch layout takes 2 tries

Post by Ereold »

Hi all!

I recently installed ibus-mozc to be able to write in Japanese. It mostly works perfectly, except for that annoying issue: I always have to press twice on the spacebar when switching layouts with Super + space. The first try is always swallowed as a normal space instead - meaning that whenever I want to switch, not only do I have to press twice, but I also have to remove the space afterwards.

Until now, I haven't had much luck in finding a solution. Actually, I haven't found anybody else with the same problem (but I'd be surprised to be the only one, so I'm guessing it's due to my poor search engine wording skills).
I wanted to try re-assigning the Super + space shortcut manually to the action, just in case it would work, but I don't know how to call that action from the CLI. But maybe that's not the best option anyway.

Do you have any idea how to help me?

Thanks for your time! :)

It looks like you are not the only one. Someone with fedora reported a simular issue at the mozc github site: https://github.com/google/mozc/issues/853

EDIT:
The shortcut to open the menu is default the super key. Maybe that is causing it in this case. You can unassign the super key for the menu by right clicking the menu, then configure and in the menu tab you can select the short key and unassign it with backspace.
If you think the issue is solved, edit your original post and add the word solved to the title.

Ah, thanks! You're right in both cases. It turns out I actually have 2 issues.

- Disabling super for the menu solves part of the problem (which is nice to know but I always open the menu with super, so I'm not sure I want to remove or modify it ^^'). I'm not sure I get the reason why TBH, because no other shortcut working with the super key behaves like that. :| Anyways, instead of changing the shortcut for the menu, how would I change the shortcut for switching language layouts? I can't find it in the shortcuts settings, and when I try to assign something else through Keyboard > Layouts > Options > Switching to another layout, it just doesn't work (super + space remains the go-to).

- And then there is still one too many space press needed to go back from hiragana to my FR layout, but seems linked to mozc then. Thanks again for the link :)

There is also mention of it at the IBUS github site: https://github.com/ibus/ibus/issues/2474 and https://github.com/ibus/ibus/issues/1817

Personally I just disable Super L and use only Super R for launching start menu. Then Super+Space won't be hindered as I only use SuperL+Space.
