I was just as upset, but the third attempt to recover, this time from a USB drive, was successful.

I find that restoring a Timeshift snapshot using a live version of Mint is better.

The unfortunate thing is that the creator TeeJee (Tony George) no longer maintains Timeshift. Mint took it over but not sure if it's being troubleshooted and maintained.

You could always try looking here - https://github.com/linuxmint/timeshift/commits/master

That certainly shows that it is being maintained. As for troubleshooting, people need to open issues at GitHub with a clear and full description of the problem.
