Re: How to Defragment NTFS in Linux

I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole. NTFS has some of those undocumented 'features' that MS likes so much. As such, Linux tools are simply unreliable for NTFS. There are no flags that'll fix this. Most of those blogs are just useless rubbish.

For anything involving NTFS other than read/write you need some Windows. I don't have any installed but I've used Hiren's Boot Disk for this in the past and it worked fine. Now all my external drivers are ext4.

TL;DNR. Not interested sufficiently to read it. Reason: see my previous message in this thread.

Why use Microsoft's proprietary NTFS in Linux, when you have the superior alternative EXT4, which is both free (libre) and Linux-native?

For compatibility with MS systems. People who dual boot Linux and Windows may need to access the same data with both systems. In my case, some of my backup drives are NFFS so my sister, who uses Windows, can access my data after I'm dead if my computers die with me (such as in a fire that BBQs me, my computers, and my onsite data) in which case, she can access my data backups kept offsite in my credit union safe deposit box.

To ensure the safety of your data, you have to be proactive, not reactive, so, back it up!

As I posted in another thread, this may be the only real solution for Linux.
