I noticed that at 150 watts the 2070 Super seems to almost make the same amount of points as its default 215 watt setting)

It is interesting how that works with F@H. I settled on 125 watts because my PC has a wimpy 500 watt power supply and the case has a single 92mm exhaust fan. Still managing a decent 2.7 million PPD.

My electric bill arrived.

Not bad, all things considered. My wife retired in Jan, 2023. I think her sewing machine is the power guzzler!

I am unable to determine how much the extra heat generated by the folding PCs impacted the natural gas bill. This year the average temperature was 33 F. Last year it was only 24F. So of course we used more DKs last year. I also raised the daytime temps in the house from 70F to 72F.

Overall I am pleased with how things are going. My points per day seem to be in that 5.5 - 6 million per day.

So I stopped running the 2 x 970 setup. It just didn't seem worth it.

After thinking about the issue of power used and points gained I realized that there were a few reasons I was using the Old Dell computer to fold.

1. We inherited the computer after my mother-in-law passed away in November, 2022. Nobody else wanted the computer. It was too old. I put a spare graphics card in and we were off and running. Slowly. Her husband had Parkinson’s the last few years of his life. Keeping the computer as a folding machine seemed like a good way to honor them. Both my parents died from cancer (age 58 & 66). The decision to keep older computers running is more of a heart versus a head (logic) decision.
2. I hate sending functioning computers to recycling.
3. Not sure about the points system F@H has created. For example, on Linux, a 1030 can average 0.2 million PPD and 11.1 work units per day. A 4090 can average 24.6 PPD and 26.6 WUPD.

Points Per WU for the 4090 is 925,888, for the 1030 it is 18,295. Is the 4090 fifty times faster than a 1030?

4. Points is points. One should be ruthless in the quest for more points.

Heat from the computer(s) should reduce the gas bill a small bit. Heating with electricity isn’t as efficient as heating with gas, but it does mean that at least a small part of the extra electric bill could be thought of as the necessary heating I’d be paying for anyway. Kinda like you said, I’m not sure I can figure out how much of the cost has just been transferred from gas heating to electric heating though.

The competition of folding is like a game. So I don’t mind spending a bit more to enjoy that part of it. In that sense, if you’re having fun, and can afford it, ultimate efficiency doesn’t really matter. When I first started folding I bought some cheap, but highly inefficient hardware to try it on, and it was fun.

It would also be nice if all of this effort did solve one of those rare and scary diseases that plagues people. The fact that it’s a possibility is worth something too.

Was able to get another space heater (PC) up and running. It has an i3 and a GTX 1050. It should be good for 350,000 PPD.

I am using Version 8 beta of the software on all computers along with the Home in the Dark Web Client. Was wondering if anybody else on he team did the upgrade?

I have the v8 software running on mint 21.2 but fold on 19.3 using v7. ( Thank you grub) I prefer the v7 software because of the batchable pause,unpause, and finish commands. I don't fold 24/7 on any of my machines and using crontab (linux) or the windows task scheduler makes keeping the folding schedule I want easy.

Newer hardware means higher points, and reaching 10,000,000,000 will be nice, but I think commitment is best measured by Work Units completed. For me, Battlenut is still the inspiration. 40,000 WUs +. Wow.

Yes, Battlenut was one of the “rock stars” of our team. In another 8 or 9 years I should be able to reach 40,000 work units.

You should post this question on the regular software section of the forum. There are lots of very knowledgeable people that can help you..

I have been using CPU-X for monitoring and "sudo nvidia-smi -pl=100" command in the terminal to adjust my power settings between 100 - 150 watts. That seems to work for me.

I have just purchased a new GPU. It is an Asus ProArt 4080, to complete my latest computer build. (NO CASE), it just sits on the desk.

This is installed on an Asus B550 wifi motherboard which is mounted on an acrylic motherboard tray. The CPU is an AMD 5800x, and this is cooled with an Arctic Freezer 11 360, and the PSU is a Corsair RM750e,

I put it all together and luckily it fired up first time and I installed the latest Cinnamon.

This will certainly be the last computer that I build.

Where do you get your stats from please.

I tried telling my gt 1030 card that we need more points. It looked at me with its little 50mm fan spinning away and said: “Not a chance Bud, 90k PPD is my max!”..

Rumor has it the new “Super” cards are coming in January. Maybe the price of the RTX 4070 will be reduced. Adding one would double my PPD.

Funny how the addition of a NVIDIA RTX 4080 allowed the team to pass the NVIDIA Corp team on the monthly list. https://stats.foldingathome.org/team They are probably laughing all the way to the bank.

I was also pleased to see we passed Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, my Alma mater.

The other interesting thing to note about the monthly list is that RTX 4080 and 4090 cards must not be that common yet (folding 24/7). A single 4090 card could generate 28 million points a day or 840M in a month. That would put them 78th on the monthly list for Nov 2023.

I can throw my 4090 at it for awhile. It's cooler here in North TX so the added heat won't matter
