Hi !!

I would like to know the main reasons why larger software firms like Adobe, Autodesk, Tencent (China) do not want to offer their commercial software products for the Linux distros

those big companies will only chase those markets that give the best return.


some of them don't even offer a Mac version of their software. ..

the World of Linux is but a Niche Market .. ..

Did you know that there is a group of code writers who will write the code for Any Printer ??
- but - they can't get any Printers Manufacturers interested - even they are doing that for FREE.

My guess is because the user base is so small. Once the Linux user base gets to Apple's MacOS levels, we'll see companies make their commercial software for Linux.
Even on MacOS, there are still many companies who don't bother offering their software. Most CAD and CAM software is strictly Windows.

So I understand that companies could still sell their commercial software products on Linux. the Linux community, as open source, would allow it?

Moreover, it looks like Canonical is trying to push harder by starting to work exclusively with hardware companies like System 76, making contracts with internet firms like Amazon, etc…

You won't find an answer here. If you want these companies to support Linux for their commercial products you have to ask them why they don't want to currently. Others here can guess and offer personal opinions as to why in general such companies don't (yet) support Linux but that's not an answer to the question you asked. You'll have to ask these companies if you want an answer instead of an opinion.

Adobe has a number of open source projects going (like the excellent website editor Brackets) and does support those on Linux.

Several Autodesk products are fully supported on Linux. Like Flame Premium, Flame Assist, Flare, Maya, Mudbox, and likely others. This is the short list of products I found with a 15 second Google search. System requirements list RHEL, Fedora, and CentOS.

I don't know Tencent so can't say anything about that.

It's not just the lack of money in providing free software. It's also the cost of supporting yet another OS and for such a relatively small userbase.

Ignorance is the main reason. How many managers of these companies run Linux or even know about linux? How many of them would bother to check their market out? People are lazy and don't like to think - it's obvious on many levels from governments through companies to average joe. Hence why company managers won't even think about Linux. Only those who heard about it, see profit in it and are not large enough not to give a damn are interested in support for Linux.

It's also the cost of supporting yet another OS and for such a relatively small userbase.

Both Apple and Microsoft spend a ton of money that Linux can't promoting their own ecosystems and operating systems, portraying them to the uneducated masses as "the only clear choice." Folks dismiss Linux as "too hard to learn" or "only for computer geeks." Just five years ago they may have been right (to a degree). Now, however, Linux has distros that are easily as user-friendly as Windows or Mac OSX, and the learning curve for Linux is no more than what a user faces switching between Windows and Mac. So I guess it's largely up to us to evangelize the platform.
