The icons on the desktop for 17.1 Cinnamon seem to have a larger amount of space between them than they did in 17.0. As a result, I can't have all my icons in one nice, neat row and it spills over into two colums. Where do I go to change the amount of space between desktop icons or is there really no way?

You can Right Click in the file browser and choose "Arrange Items" then choose 2nd from bottom "Compact Layout".
