Hi

Install report

I could not resist trying. 1346 recommended updates (729 Mo) that's something... some minutes later, I was advised to get 175 more packages. I expected the worse. :D The install went smoothly. Towards the end, Cinnamon crashed and provided me a fall-back mode that I kept till the end. Before installing the packages, I have been advised that there were some bugs:

I answered yes. After restarting, I was still on kernel 3.2, so I updated grub and rebooted to launch kernel 3.10. but I could not try it because X could not be launched. It provided me with a lot of explanations but I understood nothing and do not know how to copy it.

Other small thing that could be of interest: it would like to update libjack-jack2d-0 but for this it would uninstall wine-unstable and lots of other software, so I decided not to update this thing.

I also noticed that Dropbox and Skype have been uninstalled and did not reappear. nemo-dropbox cannot be installed because the package is reported "broken". Only caja-dropbox can be installed (???)

I still can use normally my computer with the old kernel. Still alive.

Testing in VirtualBox (can't test on a real system right now), MATE 64-bit.
No bugs during upgrade. After reboot, kernel 3.10.2 works fine.

Here are a few bugs we inherited from Testing:
  1. A bug in gtk3-engines-unico prevents any GTK+3 app (synaptic 0.80, nm-applet and others) from running.
Solution: make a newer mint-themes package available for LMDE users. IIRC it's not using unico anymore. In the meanwhile, you can switch to clearlooks or some other non-unico theme.
  2. A bug in aptdaemon prevents software-properties-gtk from starting.
Solution: get version 1.1.1 straight from Testing.
  3. A bug in apt makes mintUpdate "forget" the authentication of packages. This one even got honored with mentioning in the Update Pack info after I've reported it to Clem :) To be honest, I hoped it would be worked around somehow, considering that it has been done already in SolydXK. Or maybe I'm just thinking too much about the amount of work I've put in researching and reporting it to Debian bug tracker :)
Solution: pay no mind to the warning or get version 0.9.11 from Unstable.
  4. The old problem with ugly fonts has not been solved yet.
Solution: since things like appearance and stuff are not considered important in Debian (judging by their bug tracker), I propose making an additional package with symlinks like in the script I've made a while ago. They just need to be changed in order to be valid, because fontconfig-config now stores files in

    Code: Select all

    /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail
    instead of

    Code: Select all

    /etc/fonts/conf.avail
In the meanwhile, you can create the symlinks yourself.

I think that you should upgrade everything and not choose. It could help your system to boot on the 3.10 Kernel.

For me it's normal that Wine and Skype have been uninstalled. It's comming from the fact that Debian is now multiarch. It has uninstalled the 64bits version and you can now install the new multiarch version.

If you have already made the change it's still active.

Clem, using XFCE 4.10 my system is fine. But I think it's broken with Cinnamon. I can't launch Nemo for instance. All the gnome related tool wont launch. Good luck with that. --> Maybe bug 1 described by monsta.

This named package is the only one out of over 1200 that I did not update. It was not part of the BIG update and of its sequel and came later isolated. So, I think this is not the reason why X broke down. One possible reason however comes to my mind: I had blocked the update of seven packages, among them the NVIDIA driver. After the update, I relented and unblocked all these seven packages. The new NVIDIA driver (304.88) is now installed. Mystery.

My upgrade was problematic in that I was coming from UP6+wheezy. I had to move up to wheezy to get working multiarch support on amd64. I was a little surprised that I had to downgrade a fair number of packages in order to get UP7 installed. Are we still not even caught up to the current stable?

There were a lot of conflicts after that. I think I traced them down to two main problems. The first was that gnome-shell and friends all depend on libgjs0c, but it conflicts with libgjs0b, upon which cinnamon depends. So I can't have cinnamon and gnome-shell installed at the same time. The other problem is a lack of multiarch support in libopus0. This is now needed for audio in certain 3rd party apps. I had to remove ia32-libs and friends in order to relieve the conflicts on the i386 side of this.

Additionally, mint-meta-debian-cinnamon had to go because it depends on ttf-droid (which is now fonts-droid).

Right... another upstream blocker. This one in particular can be used as a perfect example showing how lazy developers can be. Look how old this bug is! and there's even a simple patch to make the package multiarch-compliant, but it hasn't been accepted yet.

In the meanwhile, the Mint team can use that patch to make their own version of libopus0.

The glib stack was fairly broken and gdm3 didn't work at all, so I ended up forcing everything to incoming with some apt pins. After some trial and error, I reached this steady-state:

Code: Select all

The following packages have been kept back:
  gir1.2-gnomebluetooth-1.0 gjs gnome-bluetooth gnome-shell gnome-shell-common
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 5 not upgraded.
Now I am up and running again. The above conflict is due to the before-mentioned libgjs0c/libgjs0b problem. Some of the mint-meta packages are still rather broken:

Code: Select all

Both metapackages depending on pidgin-facebookchat have been not installable for about a year. Additionally, mint-meta-debian-mate depends on some obsolete packages not present in MATE 1.6. Never mind them: they are just metapackages, after all.

Yeah, you are right about the metas. It's been a while since I paid attention to them, as they got uninstalled long ago. They would have been really handy when I was bringing my system back, though. I knew about the mate 1.6 changes too, as I use mate at work and somehow picked-up 1.6 before clem had fully-pushed the rest of UP7. It was nice to see, as it fixed some bugs (though the switch from mate-conf was a bit annoying).

Quite a few folks did the wheezy update, from what I can tell. It was a fairly painless process that brought the much-needed multiarch support. Maybe this is a good time to fix the meta packages, Clem? It may be helpful to those that have strayed away from LMDE over the past year.

Are the meta packages liable to get fixed before release to latest? If not I am going to upgrade right away. I hate losing meta packages though because I forget and it can bite me later. That said I did have to shed the codec meta package because running flash outside of a google chrome sandbox (latest greatest version always built into chrome, so always remove the generic OS install version) even on linux is asking for ownage.

Testing in VirtualBox, Cinnamon 32-bit with also MATE installed, today.

During the installation, there were 4 questions whether to replace conf. files. In 3 cases I chose to keep existing files: /etc/issue, /etc/issue.net, /etc/os-release because for example "-Linux Mint Debian Edition \n \l" was supposed to be replaced with "+Debian GNU/Linux jessie/sid \n \l". Please change.
After the installation, Cinnamon works but:
- I cannot run Gnome Classic
- I cannot run Terminal or Root Terminal or Synaptic in Cinnamon or Gnome; I can run only MATE Terminal
- click on "Quit" in Cinnamon doesn't bring the menu, and only logs out Cinnamon; click on "Shut Down" in MATE brings the menu properly

LibreOffice was upgraded from 3.5.4 (UP6) to 4.0.3-3 (UP7). Current stable LO is 3.6.7. Even LO 4.0.5 has a lot of new bugs, not to mention LO 4.1.1. As a LO user, I'd pick last supported release which is 3.6.7. now, and switch to 3-0-6 once it's available. LO in http://packages.debian.org/testing/editors/ is currently 4.1.0-5 and there is no LO in http://packages.debian.org/experimental/editors/. LO 4.1.x is not a good choice for everyday use, so it's good it's not in UP7.
My question is: what's the logic for choosing LO version for UP? Will LO remain at 4.0.3-3 until UP8? Will the next LO be 4.0.6 or 4.1.x?

Re: UPDATE PACK 7 FEEDBACK THREAD

Post by GeneBenson »

Hi Tim-int,
During the installation, there were 4 questions whether to replace conf. files. In 3 cases I chose to keep existing files: /etc/issue, /etc/issue.net, /etc/os-release because for example "-Linux Mint Debian Edition \n \l" was supposed to be replaced with "+Debian GNU/Linux jessie/sid \n \l". Please change.
Every time you start LMDE 4 files are overwritten by MintSystem with values specific to LMDE.

Code: Select all

2013-09-10 03:24:35 - /etc/os-release overwritten with /usr/share/linuxmint/adjustments/base-files/os-release
2013-09-10 03:24:36 - /etc/lsb-release overwritten
2013-09-10 03:24:36 - /etc/issue overwritten
2013-09-10 03:24:36 - /etc/issue.net overwritten
Although this can be confusing it doesn't really matter what you answer because they are overwritten at each boot.

Re: UPDATE PACK 7 FEEDBACK THREAD [new info]

Post by BrunoMiranda »

My results, so far I've noticed:

- swsusp produced errors during install (exit code 128). (purged it, the system wasn't hibernating anyway)
- synaptic is not starting up (even with Alt+F2 - gksu synaptic)
- The network applet on the panel has disappeared
- I am using LMDE MATE and I had nemo also installed, now nemo is not starting up

Restoring backup...

New info:

I've restored my previous LMDE backup and tried the thing over again. To report:
Processing 'triggers' for hicolor-icon-theme ...

(gtk-update-icon-cache:21238): GdkPixbuf-WARNING **: Cannot open pixbuf loader module file '/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders.cache': No such file or directory

This likely means that your installation is broken.
Try running the command
gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders > /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders.cache
to make things work again for the time being.
I didn't have permissions to run the above command, not even as root.

More:

- During the installation, I had to choose between old and new configuration files for a few programs. At one stage, I couldn't go on because the keyboard locked and didn't accept any input. (but the keyboard was alive as the Caps Lock LED would light on and off at keypress).
I had to press CTRL + Alt + F1 and order a reboot (the keyboard worked). Rebooted to recovery mode and dpkg --configure -a finished install.
Note: When UP5 came out, it did the same keyboard jam thing.

- After reboot, I couldn't mount a partition on another HDD using caja, I had no permissions to do it.
Solved this by going to the Control Center, Startup Applications, and enabled the Certificate and Key Storage.
Suggestion: Make sure UP7, when upgrading MATE from 1.4 to 1.6, does not disable the Certificate and Key Storage.

- Also here, the network applet on the panel has disappeared. This is my most critical thing because I use a USB broadband modem to go online and I need this.

- I haven't tried hibernation but I'm sure it's not working again even this time... :(

Restoring backup again... Will wait for the final release of UP7 and retry again later.

Thanks Clem & Team, kudos for all your efforts and keep up the good work!

Testing in VirtualBox (can't test on a real system right now), MATE 64-bit.
No bugs during upgrade. After reboot, kernel 3.10.2 works fine.

Here are a few bugs we inherited from Testing:

A bug in gtk3-engines-unico prevents any GTK+3 app (synaptic 0.80, nm-applet and others) from running.
Solution: make a newer mint-themes package available for LMDE user
s. IIRC it's not using unico anymore. In the meanwhile, you can switch to clearlooks or some other non-unico theme.
Try another theme
Adwaita
Bluebird
Greybird
Mediterranean (series)
I believe all work...
I changed it with gnome-tweak-tool. OK, all is working now, including Quit menu.
Please explain about LibreOffice versions. I myself use Mint latest. But, for others that ask me to install them "Windows", LMDE is my preferred choice. LO is the most important issue because it and it's bugs are most visible to the user.

I did notice when it upgraded that it uninstalled a 3rd party vnc like app called teamviewer (like pc anywhere, etc). Teamviewer (64 bit version) seems to have a dependency on lib32asound2 which is now gone due to multiarch. This is also why the meta package ia32-libs can no longer be installed (as mentioned above). If you bypass the install dependency the program crashes when run (will post error message when get home later but seems to be some wine errors). I understand this is more a Teamviewer issue but just an fyi to anybody upgrading.

Edit: It turns out the problem is only with the 64 bit version (which has 32 bit lib dependency - fail). The 32 bit version is actually multiarch and installs and run fine so there is the workaround. The 64 bit version was asking to run as root to start a daemon which wouldn't start.

Hi guys,

The meta will be updated yes.. it's normal for them to break here, they always get fixed before we update latest though.
