Cairo Dock vs. Docky vs. Plank vs AWN?
I am looking to install a dock and would like some feedback from folks to which they prefer and why. I have used docky in the past which seems to work fine but I don't have experience using the others. I appreciate your feedback!!

I always use Cairo Dock personally. Some have commented that they find it a bit complicated but I love having control over it. There's a simple mode anyway if the options get a bit much. I added the stable PPA to Mint and I love it. In the past I used AWN and loved it too but it's not being developed any more, and Cairo is better anyway really imho.

I've used Cairo Dock and Docky.
Cairo is more flashy, Docky is simpler. I am currently using Docky on Mint xfce as well as on Debian Wheezy

All good.
Used D and C.
But my now thinking is--I do not need someone else to customize my shortcuts.
I create them at will, make them look as I choose, and decide where and when they will show.
In my own world--this is more exacting customization.
Eye-candy without convenience has little appeal.

I used Cairo Dock with Cinnamon, it took a little configuring but it was less buggy than other docks in my opinion. In Xfce I just use the deskbar with intelligent hiding and transparency.

Thank you all for your replys. I will just have to try both Cairo and Docky to see which one is best.

+1 for plank. Less resource hungry than Cairo/Docky and still packs a ton of features.Zumwalt wrote:I use Plank.

It has it's own themer, but needs to be installed separately:
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/apps
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install plank-themer

+1 for Plank. It's very simple but does all I need. And it's very actively developed, there are new updates almost every day.

I've only ever tried Cairo... I love it... using it on Ubuntu and mint 17.3.
No issues. At all. Sometimes it needs to be restarted on mint... But no issues
