Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
Hi, I'm using linux mint 14 with xfce4, Whenever the mouse goes to do a loading animation or just randomly it will either disappear or it will glitch into a weird square picture. For instance in firefox if i hover over a website with the cursor it disappears or glitches but if i hover at the top at the menus or whatever it shows the pointer sometimes. Also the I bar for text entry shows when I hover over a text box.
Another thing to note, is that the screen cuts off a tiny bit on the right side, is their software to correct this or should I just mess with the settings on my monitor?
If it's any help my pc has geforce 6100SE onboard graphics and my graphics driver is experimental 304, i tried installing the newer one but that just messed everything up and I had to use the shell at bootup to fix everything

Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
Also, every now and then if I log out and log back in.. if I get realllllyyy lucky the mouse cursor problem is fixed until I turn the computer off or log back out.
Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
This is normalAlso the I bar for text entry shows when I hover over a text box.
Have you or can you try a different Mouse?
Did you try the nvidia driver as supplied via the sources?

Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
I can't try another mouse right now, i just moved and most of my crap is in storage..
ummm..
when I search via synaptic package manager for nvidia
the only drivers that i can see are nvidia-experimental-304 and nvidia-experimental-310.
experimental-304 is installed and if i try 310 it screws everything up.

Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
Try marking for removal the current driver
And mark to install
nvidia-current
Or the code would be

Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
I tried removing nvidia-experimental-304 and replacing with nvidia-current-updates, but that was a no go, everything booted up fine but the minute i opened an application everything froze.
I'll try again but this time replace experimental-304 with nvidia-current

Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
When you boot the live DVD. How is the mouse?
That would be using nouveau

Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
I couldn't say, I don't even have the live dvd anymore, however I removed nvidia-settings-experimental-304 and replaced with nvidia-settings, I also replaced nvidia-experimental-304 with nvidia-current and it is running beautifully so far
I'll restart to confirm that it's still fine

Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
Ok, it froze the second boot when i tried opening firefox, now it didn't freeze, the cursor displays when i hover over websites, but if i hover over textboxes or links it glitches/disappears
Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
All I ever do post install is:
But the GPU version you have seems to ring a bell in my brain.
Could that be because it's problematic.
I'll see if I can find anything
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

I restarted and the problem is fixed again, it seems i get lucky far more often with this driver.
Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
Could be worth telling us which version of Mint
As if you are employing effects, this might exacerbate the issues on such a modest GPU
Also - Are you using the Mint bootloader?

Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
Mint 14 Cinnamon? or Mate? or KDE?teepo wrote:I'm using linux mint 14, I'm also fairly certain i'm using grub.. how do i check if i'm using mint bootloader?
I was wondering if you had multiple distros installed and were perhaps using the grub bootloader of another distro to boot Mint?
But it doesn't sound like you are. So ignore me.

Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
something I've come to notice.
Sometimes when I boot, I get a grub menu, with the ability to choose memtest, etc. Sometimes, I do not, but more often I do not.
it seems that when I get the grub menu, the mouse cursor is fine, but if i don't get the grub menu the mouse is glitchy.

Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
Well, that it's kind of random is difficult to pin it down.
It probably needs someone more educated than me on this

Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
Guys, i found a simple solution to fix this problem. Simply switch back to the NOUVEAU video driver and the cursor will be ok again.
This is what you got to do: go to your linux start menu, then control center, then look for the SYSTEM section and find the "hardware drivers" icon and clic on it. Then enter your root password and in the list that pops up select the "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau" and finally clic on apply changes and restart your PC.
After that, you should be able to work fine with your cursor, without disappearing or glitching (at least this worked for me and hope it works for you too).

Re: Disappearing/glitching mouse cursor
Though it was 2016, i faced similar issue, but i could solve it without touching drivers.
In the "Display" app, there are two screens listed which are named as laptop and unknown. But physically i have only one screen (laptop) at the moment. so i disabled that unknown screen and the issue was solved.
Hope this helps others who are facing similar issue
