UP5
UP5 has its own thread now: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=113571
Don't forget to check out the "Known bugs and workarounds" section

================================================
I'm leaving this for archiving purposes
================================================

I'm proud to announce the unofficial LMDE KDE live DVD: UP4 / 201208.

Changes
A lot of bugs were resolved.
Plymouth (introduced new bugs...which were resolved...most of them).
Themes for Plymouth and Ksplash were (re)created and I hope you like them.
To keep the unofficial LMDE KDE as close as possible to Linux Mint Maya, Kid3, Inkscape, SoundKonverter and Kuser were removed.
Instead of Kuser, userconfig from the Maya repositories is used.
Other Mint Maya packages were upgraded.

For all those Nvidia users: sgfxi has been installed by default.
Install Nvidia drivers: ALT+CTRL+F1, login as root, type sgfxi and sit back.

I don't have an ATI system, so I couldn't test that.
If you have an ATI system, please post the steps taken and the results in this thread.

All tests were done according to Mint standards: http://community.linuxmint.com/iso

If you notice any problems or have ideas to improve the unofficial LMDE KDE, please leave a message or mail me:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/memberlist. ... il&u=76385

Known problems

Live Boot:
Warning: Creating compatibility simlink from /etc/mtab to /proc/mounts
Info: according to mtab, tmpfs is already mounted on /run/lock
Info: according to mtab, tmpfs is already mounted on /run/shm
Warning: mount point filesystem.squashfs does not exist skipping mount
Warning: fast boot enabled so skipping file system check
Error: startpar service returned failure live-boot

Live Shutdown:
Error: unmounting temporary filesystems umount /var/run device is busy
Error: umount /live device is busy

Live environment:
mintupdate not starting in live, but does when installed.

Live VLC
VLC doesn't work in live mode. It runs fine once the system is installed. If you need to run VLC from the live media itself, you can use the following workaround: "sudo ln -s / /filesystem.squashfs"

Live login and password
For the username, type "mint"
For the password, if asked, just press Enter.

==========================================================================

Missing packages

Amarok doesn't play

Code: Select all

apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
==========================================================================

Bug list

GLib-WARNING
I can't seem to get rid of the glib warning:
 • GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
It's the first warning you see when you boot.
I suspect it's a bug that is said to be resolved in the previous version of Plymouth.
Boot still continues without a problem, so I'm not putting too much effort into this one.
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 05&start=0

Startpar failure on shut down (Live)
Also a Plymouth related issue, this also doesn't do a thing either and the system shuts down normally.
You won't even see it if you don't hit the escape key.
 • startpar: services(s) returned failure: live-installer failed
==========================================================================

So, what now?

I'm trying to bring the unofficial LMDE KDE under the attention of the Mint team, but so far no luck. If you think that this is "the best thing since sliced bread", just spread the word (and mail the Mint team members). ;)

As soon as UP5 hits the shelves, I will build a KDE version soon after (and hopefully I'll be able to leave out the "unofficial" from the title).

Thanks Schoelje, first of all for putting it so clear that this is an unofficial respin of lmde with an alternate DE (a great one BTW :wink: ) and second for the work itself (if only i could find more than one peer in the 64bit :lol: )

I know, the download speed must be terrible.
You could try to download from my FTP server:
ftp://schoelje.serveftp.com
I can't imagine the download speed will be much better, but it's worth a try.

And if you like what I've done, please help seeding the iso.

Sweet! Thanks for all your hard work on this, Schoelje. If I wasn't already running LMDE + KDE I'd snag your ISO and give it a spin but I'll hold off to let folks who need it more quickly get it. Although I may eventually snag it to grab some of the artwork. I love that wallpaper you use, of course, and it would get a place of honor in my wallpaper rotation.

Maybe we can get to help bring this into official status. Tux knows KDE users have been asking it for a while.

I sent Clem a mail about this topic a few weeks ago but I suppose it vanished into his spam folder.
Of course, if a lot of people like what the Unofficial LMDE KDE has become I can try again and get it official.
It would certainly improve the download speed.

He's probably pretty busy, especially with the official Mint KDE ISOs getting rejected. I have written an article for my blog about your respin. I hope it doesn't direct too much traffic to your server but it may help get it seeded. My bandwidth is so limited I wish I could help some on that end.

it's a lot better now :lol: i get 3/4 peers in each iso and the most "problematic" (64bit) gives me about 7 hours to finish :mrgreen:

Yes, the download speed is really terrible.
If there is someone who has his own server and a good connection...

Hi,
In this moment I'm downloading the ISO (32bit) (via torrent of course), I'm downloading to my VPS which has a really good connection (direct downloads to more than 50Mbps).
As soon as the download is finished, it will continue doing seed for 3 days, I hope this helps :D

Also, I can put the ISO for direct download on my VPS, but I can not promise this right now.

Sorry for my english, it's not my primary language... it sucks I know... LOL!!

Greetings :mrgreen:

PS: 150MB downloaded ... uff ... takes a while haha

First of all, KZKG^Gaara, welcome to the Mint Forum.
I'm pleased to see that you joined this forum and post you first message in this tread.
Good to know that that you're going to seed the iso's...that'll help a lot.

But more importantly: give me feedback once you've tried the Unofficial LMDE KDE.

@Schoelje:
Yes, I'm just a newcomer LOL!!! thanks for the welcome :wink:
Actually I registered to comment on this thread :)
About the ISO, in this moment I've downloaded over 350MB, I don't know how long it take to download everything (because the speed may vary), but is a fact that I will seed for some days.

About the feedback, I do my best... it's very simple for me to read english, but writing it not so much. So, explain what happens and what errors I encounter, be complicated to me haha.

Thanks for the welcome, I hope to help.

PS: 400MBs downloaded...
PS: ... again, sorry for my english.

Thanks zerozero, looking forward to your feedback.
Did you have the same sound problem with the current LMDE?

Re: Unofficial LMDE KDE Live DVD

Schoelje,
yeahh :mrgreen: the issues with this *lovely* sound card are old and now well-known. it's nothing specific to way you setup the live-iso.

System Monitor? At first I didn't realize that was a KDE app since I always end up using System Activity when I click on the System Load Viewer plasmoid in my dock. Yours gives a lot more, and better, info. I may need to see if I can change what app the System Load Viewer uses on clicking it.

Re: Unofficial LMDE KDE Live DVD

System Monitor is the one used in Linux Mint KDE.
I tried to make LMDE KDE look like Linux Mint KDE as much as possible.
With, of course, the only difference that it's not based on Ubuntu but on Debian.

Unfortunately (but as one could expect) not all applications used in Linux Mint KDE have a version that runs in Debian. That's where I went for the next best choice (like Deluge instead of Transmission).

Re: Unofficial LMDE KDE Live DVD

That's fine. I was just surprised by the System Monitor. It's in my LMDE but it isn't the default app for looking at what's running. I see the Kicker uses System Activity as well but after seeing the Monitor I want to use it more instead of the Activity screen.

As far as a torrent app goes I love using Ktorrent but I seem to recall I had to do some hunting to get it installed after I got this laptop reinstalled, or maybe it was a reinstall after I moved to testing. I've made so many changes to my poor Katia (the laptop) that I can't recall what I did when anymore. :lol:

I'll probably snag your ISO this week and replace my LMDE USB stick with it so I can give it a spin. Just from what I'm seeing I suspect I'm going to end up wishing you had gotten yours out when I did my latest nuke and pave. Which is a good problem for a Linux distro to cause.

This is great!! I'm just thinking about using mintconstructor to make the custom Debian-KDE iso and lucky me, I open the forum first and read this post.. :D.

It just great, thanks Schoelje :D

I'm connected to the torrent and will let it seed for a few days for you. I don't think I'd try it out until it is more advanced, since I don't have a lot of skill. But good luck! :D
