randomizer wrote:Forgive me for asking as it may have already been asked, but how closely will Cinnamon and its forked components track changes in GNOME/GNOME Shell/Mutter from now on? Is it going to go well off on its own direction or run alongside its upstream project?
By what I understand, Cinnamon and it's forked components (like 'muffin' for instance) is going to do a bit of both. It has to follow the changes in Gnome/gnome-shell/mutter because Cinnamon/muffin is compiled against Gnome 3 so any future changes in Gnome 3 have to be to be taken into account. Same for 'gnome-shell'/mutter. Obvious changes/improvements in code especially as these changes relate directly to Gnome 3 would have to go into Cinnamon/muffin as well. Once core changes are made then new versions of Cinnamon and it's components can be built.

In a way this is an extension or the next step of what Mint has already done with past versions of their Main Edition and not that much different from what Ubuntu has been doing since the beginning since Ubuntu began as a fork of Debian. Ubuntu still has to track the latest changes to Debian (snapshot of the 'unstable' branch I believe) for their next version. Again, this is just my understanding of the situation. :D

I'm using the latest cinnamon-gIt on arch Linux and i must say it is very functional almost the same as my gnome shell setup without using all the extensions I think cinnamon shell is going to be a great success.

As Audacious 3.2 now supports MPRIS, is there any plan adding support for it to the sound menu?

PS: I really like Cinnamon, thanks for the great work! ;)

Re: Another DE option for Mint 12 - Cinnamon

I've updated to Cinnamon 1.2 and so far it's looking great with one exception. I can't add certain applications to "Favorites" from within the menu any longer nor by adding these apps via the "dconf-editor" (Org/Cinnamon) like I used to. In fact, certain ones that I had already added to "Favorites" disappeared after updating to 1.2. Some of these applications that can no longer be added to "Favorites" are; "Synaptic" (vanished from "Favorites" after update to 1.2), "Software Manager", "Advanced settings", "Backup tool" (non-mint), any of the Mint applications and more. I haven't tried adding every single application as yet in order to find which apps can be added to "Favorites" and which ones cannot but I will later.

Adding any of the above to the "Desktop" or "Panel" from the menu works fine though.

As I said above, attempting to add the above apps to "Favorites" via dconf-editor also does not work. In fact, the entries of the above apps will be removed from "dconf-editor" (Org/Cinnamon) once Cinnamon is restarted.

I've submitted a bug report on Guthub (Linux Mint/Cinnamon) about this: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/191

Can anyone please confirm this?

I really like these new improvements...only bug i noted is that the time on my panel will only read in the 24 hr mode now (example: 13:25 instead of 1:25 in the afternoon) even though my clock in the system settings is set to AM/PM time format...it read correctly until i updated my Cinnamon version to this latest one...
Anyone else experience that?

craig in cinnamon-settings -> calender. change the date format in panel.
the cap "H" means 24 hour. cap "I" means 12 hour:
%a %b %e, %I:%M
or
%a %b %e, %I:%M %p

%a %b %e, %I:%M %p
You'll also need to add "%p" after the line above if you want to see AM/PM after the time as well:

%A %b %e %l:%M %p = Monday Jan 23 2:50 PM (the "time" is just an example of course).

You'll notice a link in Cinnamon settings/Calendar labeled: "Generate your own date formats"? Clicking on that link open your browser to this page:

http://www.foragoodstrftime.com/

There you'll find all the info your need.

The overview works better as just a windows overview, as it is in 1.2, but it needs to show workspaces as well. Otherwise looking good, the desktop effects aren't my bag but lots of users like them and miss compiz for the same reason, so good to see Cinnamon get some built-in effects already.

I agree. I liked the workspaces dock in the overview.
Maybe someone will code it up as an extension :D

I think I read somewhere on github that they're working a horizontal workspace dock into the overview - or maybe I'm just imagining things

I would like to see it as selectable (horizontal or vertical ) under overview settings in cinnamon settings.

Thanks guys...that did it...i also posted it in the "bugs" section for Cinnamon and while doing so noticed others had mentioned that too

Once i changed the %H to %I the clock immediately changed to am/pm format...i saw the references of what to use on that web page the program links to that you mentioned...and also ok about how to add am/pm designation in panel after the time, i did that too now (%p) and that was also added instantly...i didn't realize i was missing that still (am and pm indicator)

Easy enough to do, for an old linux and mint "pro" like me (i kid) :) but might be a bit confusing for a newbie to figure out...

Am I wrong or not it's not possible to move windows to another (virtual) desktop anymore?

And the question directly associated - what's the purpose of the "corner overview" now without having desktops aside?

I do hope that all glossy and shiny appearance customization stuff improvements are over and that functional stuff (that was, btw, working in previous Linux Mint version) - will see the daylight.

By what I can see you have to revert back to right-clicking on the title of the open window you wish to move to another workspace and using the right-click "Move to workspace..." options to do so. According to the Cinnamon 1.2 post (http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/?p=119), there are plans to develop a new Expo type plugin for moving windows between work places that will be hooked to a keyboard shortcut. Cinnamon is still very much a work in progress. :)

@kmb42vt Tnx for the reply

However  I'm not sure what this means...

Did you mean doing this in 12 Cinnamon? And if yes, how?

It's not necessary to have right-click functionality, but now I can't move windows to another desktop anyhow! In previous Cinnamon it was possible to move them just like in default Gnome session (MGSE) by clicking on left corner icon and using drag&drop. This is not possible now, as now only overview of windows from current desktop is displayed.

Yup, this is in LM 12 Cinnamon and what I meant was that the only way I can see to move windows to another workspace(s) is to right-click on the window title bar (I missed adding "bar" in my last reply. Sorry about that) and using the workspace switching options in the resulting menu as shown in the image below.

And yes, I agree. It would be good if we still had the ability to drag and drop windows between workspaces like we did in 1.1.3 but I hear that ability is going to be added back in the near future. The overview that we have in 1.2 is not the same overview we had in 1.1.3 which was the original gnome-shell overview. The one in 1.2 is more like the old Compiz "Scale" plugin. Anyway, if this isn't what you're looking for then perhaps I'm that I'm not understanding you correctly. I can be a bit slow you know. :D
