HP laserjet professional m1212nf MFP

Post by sergiord »

Hi. I am trying to install this printer all day long in Linux mint 10.
I have hplip and i installed hp-plugin as well.
In HPLIP toolbox, the hplip does not find my printer. I tried to install manually, giving the printer address I copy from the output of the command hp-check -b but it did'nt work.

I know this printer is supported by my version of hplip and I don't understand what is happening. Please, help me.

Thanx

Just adding some information. This is what I get with the command hp-check -b :
HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.10.6)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3

Copyright (c) 2001-9 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it
under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Saving output in log file: hp-check.log

Initializing. Please wait...

Is the printer connected by USB or by network cable? I had difficulty with USB connection on an HP printer; it didn't show up on the list. I eventually figured out that four of the 16 USB connections on the computer are controlled by a separate controller and are not recognized by Linux. Plugged it into a different USB port and it showed on the list immediately, installation was near instant.

This is what I did to get my "HP m1212nf MFP" to work under Linux Mint 11. Hope it will be helpful.

My printer is connected to Ethernet at 192.168.1.93.
I am not using USB connection.

Download "HPLIP 3.11.10.run" from "http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/in ... index.html".
My download folder is "~/Download/HP_Printer/hplip-3.11.10"

Start a terminal window and type:
cd ~/Download/HP_Printer/hplip-3.11.10
chmod +x hplip-3.11.10.run
sudo ./hplip-3.11.10.run

The installer started and asked several questions which are shown below.

error: You are running the installer as root. It is highly recommended that you run the installer as a regular (non-root) user. Do you still wish to continue?
Continue with installation (y=yes, n=no*, q=quit) ? y
I am not sure if it had to be installed as root.

Please choose the installation mode (a=automatic*, c=custom, q=quit) :a

Is "Linux Mint 11" your correct distro/OS and version (y=yes*, n=no, q=quit) ? y

If you are installing a USB connected printer...
Restart or re-plug in your printer (r=restart, p=re-plug in*, i=ignore/continue, q=quit) :i
My printer is connected to Ethernet at 192.168.1.93

It opens the "HP Device Manager - Setup" GUI.
Select "Network/Ethernet/Wireless network (direct connection or JetDirect)"
Click Next.

Select from Discovered Devices
Select "HP Laserjet Professional m1212nf MFP"
Click Next.

In the next window, select "Download and install the plug-in from an HP authorized server (recommended)".
Click Next.

"Driver Plug-in License Agreement" window opens.
Click "I agree to ...".
Click Next.

Message "Plug-in installation successful".
Click OK.

Dialog window "Setup Device" opens.
Modify fields you wish to change.
Click "Send test page to printer".
Click "Add Printer" button.

No paper came out of the printer and got a message that a filter was missing and I started the trouble shooeter.

Trouble shooeter opened a dialog window with message:
"Printer 'HP_M1212nf_MFP' requires the 'foomatic-rip-hplip' program but it is not currently installed.
Click Cancel.

Searched internet and found this:
cd /usr/lib/cups/filter
ln -s foomatic-rip foomatic-rip-hplip

Open "Printing" in the control center.
Right click on the printer (mine is 'HP_M1212nf_MFP') and select Properties.
Click "Print Test Page".
Finally a page was printed successfully.

Not sure if this ever got resolved but for others...

3 times now I've had this problem and the only solution is to install the printer and then wait - I think you have to actually turn it off and restart Linux as well but in each case, a day or so later my printer worked fine with no other work from me.

G'day there, Journyman16 ,

it does pay to start a New Post about your own issue, rather than attach it to an very old post, from someone else.
- even if your answer is still quite similar, to the original.
as these days, as multi postings of the same issue can be more beneficial, to search on.

Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] - when your problem is solved!
and DO LOOK at those Unanswered Topics - - you may be able to answer some!.
