Help with Netgear wn111v2 usb wireless, please?!-SOLVED

Post by deka316 »

Hi,
I just recently installed Mint(Felicia) on my Mpc transport x1000. I used ndiswrapper to install the drivers for my belkin pci wireless card using the drivers that came on the XP cd with no problem. Then I attempted to do the same with my USB Netgear wn111v2 adapter and ran into all sorts of problems, most importantly the biggest problem is that the drivers for this are on the cd and the cd only contains the setup.exe files. I downloaded and unpacked cabextract and unzip, I am fairly new to using terminal and I do not know what commands to enter to have the .exe file extracted to my desktop, or if this is the solution I need. Can someone help me please?

Connect the Netgear to USB and run lsusb and post here
Do you have both wifi gadgets in the same computer?
Also tell us which edition of Felicia you have (main or...)

Hey Husse, I ran lsusb and this is the output I got from the terminal:
dekaband@dekaband-laptop ~ $ lsusb
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 0846:9001 NetGear, Inc.
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0483:2015 SGS Thomson Microelectronics TouchChip® Fingerprint Reader
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
dekaband@dekaband-laptop ~ $

It reads as netgear, the light on the adapter is working but that's about it! I am Linux Mint 6 felicia main edition. I have driver installed through ndiswrapper for my belkin card and that works ( with a weak signal) but it was not plugged into my laptop when I ran lsusb. Can you make sense of this any possibly offer a solution? I am really new so I don't really understand alot yet! Thanks!

This Netgear device uses an Atheros chip with limited support
It is possible to get it working with the native Linux driver otus which at present seems to be available only from "git" and needs a patch for WPA so that's out of the question (experimental - hopefully a stable driver appears soon)
So you have to use ndiswrapper
You need the .inf and/or .sys files from the Windows driver
You should be able to open the exe and extract the files
unzip -a file.exe
or
cabextract file.exe
Once you have the files it seems that it should work quite OK

Hey Husse, I entered this into the terminal:
dekaband@dekaband-laptop ~ $ unzip -a '/home/dekaband/Desktop/setup.exe'

and this is the output I got :
[/home/dekaband/Desktop/setup.exe]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
note: /home/dekaband/Desktop/setup.exe may be a plain executable, not an archive
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /home/dekaband/Desktop/setup.exe or
/home/dekaband/Desktop/setup.exe.zip, and cannot find /home/dekaband/Desktop/setup.exe.ZIP, period.

There is also an autorun.exe in the netgear cd I have and I am conufsed which file I have to unizip... I am really new, so I am not sure where I am going wrong with this. Can you help me? Thanks!

Then you may be left with
cabextract file.exe
Have you tried to double click it?
I think the archiver should open

Husse, when I run cabextract setup.exe this is the command line output I get: dekaband@dekaband-laptop ~ $ cabextract '/home/dekaband/Desktop/WLAN/setup.exe' /home/dekaband/Desktop/WLAN/setup.exe: no valid cabinets found

All done, errors in processing 1 file(s)
.
And when I double click the file I get this command line output: 7-Zip 4.58 beta Copyright (c) 1999-2008 Igor Pavlov 2008-05-05
p7zip Version 4.58 (locale=en_US.UTF-8,Utf16=on,HugeFiles=on,1 CPU)

Error: /home/dekaband/Desktop/WLAN/setup.exe is not supported archive

Errors: 1
.
I am so stuck right now, It is getting really frustrating for me! I wish netgear would post the XP drivers somewhere but the only files you can download are these self extracting installers. Not sure what to do from here. :?

Well if the file I sent you did not work it was the wrong file
I don't like it but it seems you have to use wine and open the exe there

Thanx a lot cdproject! Your solution worked miracles. After getting the .inf file into ndisgtk it took maybe 30 seconds to be up and running (the most difficult part was to enter the password :-) ).

Again, thanx a lot!

Quick questions, does anyone know if the proposed solution with wnda3100 drivers works with wn111v1 devices as well?

Thanks!

cdproject wrote:I had a hard time getting this to adapter to work also. came across a cure on the Ubuntu website which involved using WNDA3100 drivers!!! I have attached them to this post for you to use. Simply unpack them, go to Administration > Window Wireless Drivers and point to the unpacked inf file and your adapter will be recognised straight away. Then connect as per normal. I now have a much stronger and more stable signal then when I was using my Realtek wireless!!!
I followed these directions and installed just fine, but when i try to connect ,it connects for a minute then completly freezes my system. i have to do a hard shutdown to reboot my system. im running the latest linux mint 8. im not sure if its a bug or not ? please help.

@irish176esb I believe I posted this back when I was using either LM 6 or 7, I don't remember off the top of my head. But I do know that I kept the same netgear adapter and it worked without using ndiswrapper in LM 8 helena, I know sometimes wireless drivers can cause a kernel panic and the machine will have to be hard shutdown because everything goes crazy and freezes up. I am looking into a solution for you. Please read the "rules" and post your output from the terminal here so we can help you. Cheers,

I just picked up one of these wireless adapters (no idea of which version, yet) and, after finding this thread, I installed the wireless driver above. It works - if I manually enter the login info.

Although I have laptops that can auto-log onto the network, I don't see how to make it automatic here, without requiring manual manipulation, entering the password and ignoring the second keyring password.

It also looks as if connecting to the router may take longer than it takes for XBMC to run and start looking for the networked files. How can I assure that the connection is made before XBMC wants it?
