[solved] Old machine, updated to 21.3 no internet

Post by briholt »

Edit:

The iommu settings may have been the cultprit. I'm at least able to use the wifi wireless.

I did 2 things

changed the grub command line to :

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash iommu=soft amd_iommu=off"
iommu = soft wasn't enough.

And I also disabled IOMMU in the bios.

I"m not sure which one worked.

My usb3 ports appear to be working now, and I have wifi so that's good enough for now.

odd behavior is that if my wired/Ethernet connection is "up", even if unconnected...no ethernet cable plugged in, my wireless won't connect.

It's the drivers. These were working with mint 19. But I think it's the new kernel. Maybe I need to try an older one? Would like to avoid that.

I have a dual boot system but it's older and I'm not sure if bios has changed...does the bios get changed with a new Operating system install? Doesn't seem like it.

I can see the different wireless networks/ access points...I can click on them and am prompted for a password, but nothing ever connects.

Here is the inxi -Fxxx

You should disable fast startup in Windows: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... html#ID1.1

Also, post what this shows:

Code: Select all

rfkill list ; iwconfig ; mokutil --sb-state

There are not any blocks...I"m on the window side right now so I can't run those until I switch out...

Fast start up wouldn't have been enabled by installing mint 23 would it?...and it's old windows 8 not 10 or 11.

I'll see what I can get

Right, no fast startup then. Are you using a VPN? If so, a killswitch maybe.

Have you tried restarting the router/modem & machine?
You can also try shut down & unplug the machine, remove battery (if possible), hold the power button down for 40 seconds, & try wifi again.

The machine gets shut down every day...I'd have to wait on the modem as others are using it but I could try that tonight.

Since I'm seeing a lot of posts about wifi and bluetooth not working with the newer kernel, would it make sense to just buy a new PCI wifi/ethernet card?

I'd have to find one compatiable with the older motherboard:

Gigabyte model: 990FXA-UD3 serial: N/A
UEFI: American Megatrends v: F2 date: 07/15/2013

but would that be the only thing to consider?

The other problem is that the ethernet/wired connection also does not work. I've disabled it's driver (blacklisted it) and installed a newer realtek but that doesn't work either.

I think I solved it by changing grub settings regarding iommu.

I also made a change to the bios regarding iommu.

Not sure which did the trick, (note to others...make one change at a time)...actually (edit 2024/4/2) it was the grub settings. My dual boot windows needs the bios to have the iommu enabled.
