Dummy Output

Post by EmpeRohr »

Hello there, I cannot get sound to play on my laptops speakers. There is only dummy output in sound devices This is also true for pavucontrol. AlsaMixer detects nothing else. The speakers work fine in Windows 11, so it doesn't appear to be a hardware issue. Also, I get sound if I plug in a USB speaker, but not if I use the 3.5mm jack.

I have tried the suggestions in the Tips for Troubleshooting Sound Issues, as well as a few others in different posts here and across the internet. I am quite desperate here, so a little bit of help would be appriciated.

My System:

Welcome to the forum, EmpeRohr.

Please provide the output of inxi -Axxx. I'd like to see if we can determine why the first device is showing N/A. The additional x's should give us the chipID and we may be able to get more info on it.

Some of the below is similar to what I found in this SOF bug report ADL: Load tplg file and return lots of errors from SOF driver #8247.

That was from a while ago and not everything is exactly the same so let's see if we can get more details about your hardware before taking any action.

That did not provide much new information as I had hoped. :|

What I believe some of the error messages may indicate is some of the file names may have changed over time and the kernel you are currently using may be looking for a newer filename that what you have currently installed. I would like you to try the latest files and see if that changes the output.

Take a Timeshift snapshot and then follow the directions in this post to get the sof v2023.12.1 files. Then reboot and run

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof[-]|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"
again and we'll see if that makes a difference.

I don't know if Schenker laptops are their own or based on something else so I'm not finding much under their name.

Schenker is a german based company who builds business laptops as well as gaming (brand xmg), they also own Tuxedo Computers who builds linux laptops. They are working closely with intel in design. ( And yes, i reached out to all of them)

I hope the information helps

The firmware did update.

Previously it said:

Code: Select all

sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl 0000:00:1f.3: Firmware info: version 2:0:0-b678a
sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl 0000:00:1f.3: Firmware: ABI 3:20:0 Kernel ABI 3:23:0
and now it says:

Code: Select all

sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl 0000:00:1f.3: Firmware info: version 2:2:0-57864
sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl 0000:00:1f.3: Firmware: ABI 3:22:1 Kernel ABI 3:23:0
Please provide the output of

Code: Select all

aplay -l
with the usb speaker attached and then run it again without the speaker attached.

I'm not finding much information and what I am finding seems to be for HP laptops. :?

Tuxedo does make some components which tend to work better (if at all) on their OS, but I would not expect sound to be one of them.

While you have sound playing through your usb speakers, please run

Code: Select all

pacmd list-sinks
and post the output.

If you add LC_ALL=C to a command such as LC_ALL=C aplay -l then it automatically puts the output in English. Sorry, I forgot to mention that.

I now understand what you meant when you said your usb speakers work. They are using their own sound card which is why they are working. I didn't realize that until your most recent post.

Are you dual-booting with Windows that you could go into it and see if it shows what hardware is being used?

I've not yet found a way to get around the error messages you posted. I'm having difficulty finding anything more that what I found originally which seems to be for different hardware than yours.

Hey,
i do not use windows anymore, since it once effed up my bootloader after a big update. But until i had dualboot, with windows fast boot disabled, sound used to work in windows. That is what i don‘t get. Do you think sound wiukd work again, with windows and all drivers installed? Would that work with a vm too?

Having seen it happen many times, I do get it. Just because drivers were provided that worked in Windows does not mean that firmware and drivers are available for Linux-based distros.

Do you have any bluetooth sound devices? Lots of times bluetooth works even when other sound paths do not.

If Schenker sold you the laptop with Windows on it, then I would hope sound would work again with Windows and all drivers installed.

I do not know. I suspect it may not because vm's often pass through the hardware of the host and in this case the Linux Mint host does not have sound. However, I could be wrong.
