mint victoria 21.2 log in screen freezes

Post by rodder_s »

I have been using this for quite a while and no problems. I recent changed the quiet splash to include level 3 which may have changed things but there is a long wait to get the log in screen and when it appears it is frozen and cant type or use the mouse. Usually need to do a hard press on the power button and even then it often does the same again. I did all the updates and even tried to go back to the 9th March timeshift but to no avail. Any help asap would be much appreciated and Im sorry if this topic is not on thread.

Please explain what that means you did?

It is difficult to help you without any information about your hardware. Do you have your install usb/dvd? If so, please boot to it and provide your System Information if you are not able to get into your current Linux Mint install.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Thanks for your reply. I just turned it on first up this morning and had to go through turning it off with the power button 3 times before the mouse or password would work.

I also changed the boot back to just quiet splash rather than adding level 3 into that instruction. That was just to get rid of the messages that popped up at login.

The mouse and keyboard are external or are they part of the laptop? Have you tried both external and attached ones?

I'm not really familiar with Apple hardware to know about the touchpad/keyboard on the laptop.

Thanks again for your support. I am using a mac book but there is no apple software on it.
I started from scratch. To answer your question the mouse is Logitech with a blue tooth dongle and there is a usb dongle for the keyboard but I dont use that unless I have a heap to do. Since starting this thread I have just been closing the lid or suspending and it has been behaving and is virtually a quick boot up. Another thing I did a few days back was change the swappiness to 10 through config but that hasnt caused problems before either. Would seem the messages are back on start up as well which may be a good thing in relation to the freezing. So maybe it will stay ok but any other thoughts - appreciated

I specifically referenced Apple hardware (not software) in my comment. Not all Apple hardware has been reverse-engineered for optimal use on Linux-based distros.

If you are suspending the computer then you are not booting up. You are just waking the hardware from sleep. That is different from booting the computer after it was shut down.

I have now restarted it a few times and seems ok again for now. Just wierd I guess. Re the mac thing I have used this for years since mint 18 I think and very few issues so just lucky I guess. Thanks again for your help but Ill leave the thread open for now in case anyone else has had it happen.

Thanks again for all your help and to the most part it has been ok but now is hanging again long enough to get me worried about it not opening at all. I have taken a shot of the second screen that comes up now which talks about usb ports. The only thing I have in usb is the wireless usbs for the mouse and keyboard. Image
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Based on your previously posted output, it appears that is your Logitech hardware.

Code: Select all

Device-2: 1-2:3 info: Logitech Unifying Receiver type: Keyboard,Mouse
    driver: logitech-djreceiver,usbhid interfaces: 2 rev: 2.0 speed: 12 Mb/s power: 98mA
    chip-ID: 046d:c534 class-ID: 0301
If you are not getting a timeout message and the keyboard and mouse are working, then I'm not sure what you would like us to do. Unplug it and re-attach it and see if that helps.

Perhaps a change in a future kernel will make it happen faster.

Thanks for your reply. Helps to know what your looking at. I had a look around re the logitech side of things and I leave the unifying receivers in the laptop even if I don't use the wireless keyboard for a while so I have tried taking that one out for now. I also installed solaar but it doesn't show any errors so I guess as you say maybe future updates will help solve that if it doesn't make it worse. Im still using kernel 5.15 supported till 27 but there are some newer ones but Often the newer ones are flakier than the old ones. Anyway great help - thanks again
