Live session starts from USB but ask to remove installation medium just when the GUI is displayed
Hi,
I'm trying to install a dual boot W10+ LM on a HP Laptop from USB device,
USB device seems to be OK because used to set dual boot on another PC.
USB live sessions starts, GUI is displayed with the icon to make the install.
But a few seconds later, it's black screen with a message to remove installation medium and press ENTER.
PC is stopped and nothing is installed.
I've some error at startup :
ACPI BIOS Error (bug) : Could not resolve symbol [\_SB.WLBU._STA.W ....
Any ideas ?
Regards
FM

Hello and welcome to the forum.
I think you can ignore that ACPI BIOS Error. It is insignificant and unrelated to your problem.
I have a few ideas to try.
Boot into windows and disable faststartup:

https://fosspost.org/prepare-your-pc-fo ... cure-boot/

Then boot into your bios and disable secure boot:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... ecure-boot
https://fosspost.org/prepare-your-pc-fo ... cure-boot/
Then try the USB Live Boot. Does it work well? If so, you can try the install.

Re: Live session starts from USB but ask to remove installation medium just when the GUI is displayed
Hi Mikeflan,
W10 faststartup was already disabled (turn off hibernation with powercfg).
Secure boot also disabled.
Linux Mint starts from USB Live, the screen with install icon is displayed but a few seconds later a message ask me to remove the installation media and press return. The PC shutdown.
I forgot, but i've the following message during boot sequence:
kfd kfd: amdgpu: STONEY not supported in kfd
I try to add radeon.modeset=0 in grub but same result.
Is the LM version on my USB too old ?
Any idea ?

I have heard something about stoney graphics having some issue.
Maybe we should post your system info. If you want to do that type this in a terminal:
Post the output to this forum in "Code" tags. The button that inserts these tags is marked </>, which is in the mini toolbar above the edit box where you type your reply.

Re: Live session starts from USB but ask to remove installation medium just when the GUI is displayed
Please see AMD Stoney and Wani graphics and problems with 5.15.0-85 and newer 5.15 kernels.
If you are installing Cinnamon, just use an Edge ISO.
If you are using MATE or Xfce, then install LM21.2 or older and upgrade the kernel to 6.5 before rebooting the computer after running the updates after you install.

Sorry for the delay,
I try with Edge ISO but still having the problem.
I don't know how to use inxi on USB live because i can't start a terminal to run the command.
Any idea ?

Ctrl-Alt-t usually starts a terminal.
You can also start it from the menu (LM button at lower left).

Re: Live session starts from USB but ask to remove installation medium just when the GUI is displayed
Hi,
As i couldn't access to a terminal from my LM USB Live, i made a Debian 12 USB Live and installed it.
In repair mode, i was able to access a terminal.
Attached archive :
- logfile_startx : log while starting X from terminal mode
- Xorg.0.log
- inxi : inxi -Fxxxrz command logs
- grub
Hope it can help !

Re: Live session starts from USB but ask to remove installation medium just when the GUI is displayed
That shows your system has Stoney graphics.
Device-1: AMD Stoney [Radeon R2/R3/R4/R5 Graphics] vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: amdgpu
v: 6.3.6 arch: GCN-3 ports: active: eDP-1 empty: DP-1,HDMI-A-1 bus-ID: 00:01.0
chip-ID: 1002:98e4 class-ID: 0300
Please review the information I already provided with regards to your options:
Edited to add: You should also NOT be adding these kernel parameters. Your GPUs automatically use amdgpu without you forcing it and I am not aware of any reason you would need to change the default for dc or dpm. No one else with those GPUs needs to do that.SMG wrote: ⤴Wed Jan 24, 2024 8:47 pmPlease see AMD Stoney and Wani graphics and problems with 5.15.0-85 and newer 5.15 kernels.

Re: Live session starts from USB but ask to remove installation medium just when the GUI is displayed
Hi SMG,
I made an USB live with linuxmint-21.3-cinnamon-64bit-edge.iso which has a 6.x kernel.
I only have a screen with LM circle bitmap and then ask me to remove the USB key.
I really don't understand what's happen.

Re: Live session starts from USB but ask to remove installation medium just when the GUI is displayed
You are trying to boot the USB and nothing is coming up on the screen except the LM logo?
It sounds like your computer might be trying to boot from the hard drive and not the usb?

Re: Live session starts from USB but ask to remove installation medium just when the GUI is displayed
Hi SMG,
I've got the "desktop" with the "install icon" displayed a few seconds and then a message to remove USB.
Not enough time to start install.
Sure that no boot from HD.

And you are seeing that in both ISO versions you tried?
How did you make the usb install stick?
