nemo fails and then can't be restarted without reboot

Nemo fails and then can't be restarted without reboot. I would like to be able to restart without reboot.

I have tried:

ps aux | grep nemo
getting the process id
issuing a "kill -9 <pid>


pstree -p <pid>
insuring that all process tree items are also killed.

mv ~/.config/nemo ~/.config/nemo_backup

sudo apt remove nemo
sudo apt install nemo

Installed nautilus
nautilus also will not run

None of the above has resolved the issue.

dolphin is also installed.
dolphin still runs.

Any ideas what can be done? Like I said, a reboot does fix the issue, so there must be something that can be killed that I am not killing.

To restart just nemo use ctrl+alt+esc

I have the same problem. If nemo fails or hangs, nothing can be done to make it run again.
Even when i kill all instances in htop, nemo still won't run normally unless i reboot!

Every 4 to 8 months or so I have nemo fail - where all nemo windows across all workspaces shuts down. When that happens I just restart Nemo fine.

Can either of you describe what happens when nemo fails for you?

Next time it happens to either of you, please post the output of nemo typed in a terminal.

I am the one who started this thread. Here is some feedback since Nemo has now failed. I am now providing the responses requested:

Went to terminal and typed nemo: the terminal just hung with no response even after 5 minutes of waiting.

Went to terminal and typed "sudo nemo": ERROR SET META:15 Setting attribute metadata::nemo-icon-view-auto-layout not supported
"sudo nemo" did produce a nemo window with root privileages.

Went to terminal and typed nautilus (since it is also loaded): The program runs and opens a nautilus window but it only displays files and folders after an abnormal 20 or 30 second delay.

Also, dolphin is loaded and it operates normally.

ps aux is ran while nemo is hung:

pkill nemo does not return any errors. However, issuing nemo command results in same hanging.

ctrl-alt-esc was really bad because the whole computer locked up for more than 20 minutes before cinnamon dropped to fallback mode. Therefore, nothing could be done once ctrl-alt-esc was hit except to either wait or hard reboot.

Also, only after fallback did I see that my commandline "nemo" that had been hung now reported back. Not sure if the errors are due to fallback or they were actual errors causing the hanging during normal cinnamon operation.

The upside of cinnamon failing to fallback is that then the computer unfroze and after restarting cinnamon, nemo was working again without a reboot. Of course it only cost greater than an hour to get the computer to respond after freezing.

This is what I would do:
Shutdown all nemo. Search for it in ps and kill all nemo.
Maybe even do a restart.

Restart nemo via terminal. Does it work?

If not, create another user. Does nemo work there?
