The word 'unknown' appended to file names on Desktop

A few days ago I noticed that the word 'unknown' appended to file names on Desktop...


I also find "volume: unknown" under properties of file or folder.

Interestingly, shortcuts to web pages don't have this...

I have tried everything I can think of to figure out what's happening but to no avail, can anyone help please?

Having unknown for volume is not unusual, so this is probably unrelated to your problem.

That is very odd. If you create a new file does it have "unknown" on the end?

Please confirm that the "unknown" is on the end of all the Desktop files by typing this in a terminal:

Consider posting some of the output here.

I only get 'unknown' appended to a file or folder on the Desktop.

No files or folders in ~/ have this appended.

That means the "\r"."unknown" is not really in the filename.
I can' imagine why Nemo chooses to see it that way. Very odd.
