[Solved] HP ELITEDESK 800 G2 SFF removes bootability from usb

Post by e3e »

Why my "HP ELITEDESK 800 G2 SFF INTEL CORE i5-6500 3.20GHZ 8GB RAM 250GB HDD " removes boot ability from my uefi installed linux mint 21.3 xfce usb drive while my sata 250GB HDD keeps its boot abilty to boot uefi installed linux mint 21.3 xfce. My YUMI exFAT usb drive keeps its boot ability from what I installed linux mint 21.3 xfce?

I don't know. Can you tell us what it does instead of booting up that USB drive?

For example to make sure that linux mint 21.3 xfce uefi and not legacy will be installed I have to choose "Erase disk and install Linux Mint Advanced features... None selected"

HP ELITEDESK 800 G2 SFF removes bootability from usb

Post by e3e »

When I try to boot this way installed linux mint 21.3 xfce uefi usb drive and I boot it first time (after Installing) I have 2 choices from the boot menu of my computer:

1. "UEFI - ubuntu"
2. "UEFI - SanDisk Ultra 4C530001300510101401"

and if I choose:

2. "UEFI - SanDisk Ultra 4C530001300510101401"

I get "Reset System" and after half minute I get 5 sentences:

1. "BootDevice Not Found"
2. "Please install an operating system on your hard disk"

(Of course because before I started to install linux mint 21.3 xfce uefi on usb drive I removed my 250GB HDD)

3. "Hard Disk - (3F0)"
4. "F2 System Diagnostics"
5. "For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup

and if I choose "F2 System Diagnostics" I get after half minute 7 sentences:

1. "HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI"
2. "Version 1.15.0.0 - BIOS"
3. "For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/PCDDiags"
4. "Memory Test"
5. "Hard Drive Check"
6. "Language"
7. "Exit"

and if I choose "Hard Drive Check" I get immediately 2 sentences:

1. "Quick Check"
2. "Extensive Check"

and if I choose "Extensive Check" I get immediately 2 sentences:

1. "No hard drive installed. Please check power and data cables"
2. "Main Menu"

and if I choose "Main Menu" I get immediately again the same 7 sentences:

1. "HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI"
2. "Version 1.15.0.0 - BIOS"
3. "For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/PCDDiags"
4. "Memory Test"
5. "Hard Drive Check"
6. "Language"
7. "Exit"

and if I choose "Memory Test" I get immediately some sentences:

1. "HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI"
2. "Memory Quick Check : Test in progress"
3. "Press Escape (esc) to cancel"
4. "Estimated Time Remaining 21 min 32 sec
5. "Progress 1%"

and after some time I get some sentences:

1. "HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI"
2. "Memory Quick Check : PASSED"
3. "For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/PCDDiags"
4. "Back to main menu"

and if I choose "Back to main menu" I get immediately again 7 sentences:

1. "HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI"
2. "Version 1.15.0.0 - BIOS"
3. "For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/PCDDiags"
4. "Memory Test"
5. "Hard Drive Check"
6. "Language"
7. "Exit"

and if I choose "Exit" I get "Reset System" and after half minute I get again 5 sentences:

1. "BootDevice Not Found"
2. "Please install an operating system on your hard disk"
3. "Hard Disk - (3F0)"
4. "F2 System Diagnostics"
5. "For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup

and If I reboot the computer I get again 7 sentences:

1. "HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI"
2. "Version 1.15.0.0 - BIOS"
3. "For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/PCDDiags"
4. "Memory Test"
5. "Hard Drive Check"
6. "Language"
7. "Exit"

HP ELITEDESK 800 G2 SFF removes bootability from usb

Post by e3e »

I just installed grub loader on the usb what was disable to boot. So I did not need to install linux mint 21.3 xfce. I bootet the usb drive on the other computer and installed grub customizer and made visible. I started up my "HP ELITEDESK 800 G2 SFF INTEL CORE i5-6500 3.20GHZ 8GB RAM". I got "Reset System" (again). After restarting up computer I pressed F9 to get the boot menu. I had to choose "Boot from file". Then I had to choose "PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x14,0x0)/USB(0x14,0x0)/HD(1,GPT,6AA27CAF-0743-446C-87B9-BB52BD". Then I had to choose "EFI". Then I had to choose "ubuntu". Then I had to choose "grub64.efi". Then I had to choose "Linux Mint 21.3 Xfce". Finaly I got my Linux Mint 21.3 Xfce on my usb drive. It works. Thanks

OK, sounds like you got it sorted.

If you get these choices, I would select option 1.
1. "UEFI - ubuntu"
2. "UEFI - SanDisk Ultra 4C530001300510101401"
