my cable connected modem is undetectable by my linux box.[SOLVED]

Post by Logansfury »

Hello everyone :)

I wanted to get some info about my modem. I was suggested to use Modem manager. I checked and it was already installed on my mint by default.
However, when I did a mmcli -L command to list all modems I got a "no modems found" message. I installed Modem-manager-gui just in case that gave me any missing dependencies, but the gui version cant see the modem either. It is cable connected.

Can anyone help?

I'm not sure about the terminology.
Is your modem a 3G/4G/5G, mobile anyway, one?
Does "cable connected" means connected to "cable internet" as it is called in some countries?
Because AFAIK "modem manager" is meant for mobile networks.

Hello MiZoG,

Thank you so much for the reply. Yes cable connected here in the US refers to PC cable connected to Modem :)

I did NOT see anything about modemmanager being wireless only, that would certainly explain why it's not seeing the modem from the dell. The HP linux box is wireless conected, I will run modemmanager on that.

Well I just tried modemmanager on my wireless connected HP linux box. Just as with the wired Dell, the program says no devices detected :(

Sorry I missed part of your question:

It's a COMMSCOPE TG-4482, a dual band 2.5Ghz/5Ghz combination modem and 255 device router, panoramic.

apt show modem-manager-gui
returns:
"... This program is a simple graphical interface for ModemManager, Wader and oFono
daemon D-Bus interfaces. It can send, receive and store SMS messages, send USSD
requests and read answers in GSM7 and UCS2 formats, and scan for available
mobile networks."

It is not meant for cable internet modems.

Well that's mildly infuriating. I had specifically asked for a tool to get data about a wired cable modem when I was told to look at MM. :(

Cable or not, yours is more or less a standard modem/router, i.e. accessible via its web-interface.
This is the way you can "manage" it from your PC anyway.
Type your router's ip in a browser, insert the required credentials, change whatever setting you want.
All its settings are configured and stored locally (in your modem/router).
You don't need a gui app installed in your PC.

Yeah I have always used http://192.168.0.1 in my browser to access my modem and open ports for programs, etc.

As usual, I am playing with my conky minimalis widget. I was just trying for fun to see how much info about my modem that my linux box could pull from scripting :)
