BSOD after install with 0xc00000e error [SOLVED]

Post by DYNAMITE_007 »

Hello, I wanted to move to linux and didn't want to install in on my main PC first before getting the hang of it. So, I installed linux using a live USB and wiped the windows on my laptop (HP Da15xxx, i5 8th Nvidia MX110). During the install i did tinker myself with the partitions and deleted the windows ones before ulimately choosing the second option (Erase and install linux mint cinnamon). The install was flawless and as soon as I was done with it, it asked me to remove the installation media and press enter. As soon as did that the laptop shows BSOD on startup. I installed again but the problem comes up in next boot. I have never used linux before so I do not know anything above the terminal so please explain me like I'm 5.

One thing to note is that the live version works well if I use to through the USB but the installed version gives me the issue.

EDIT: going through "Perform MOK management" and enrolling a key after the install has probably fixed my issue.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

In the Live Boot open a terminal with Ctrl-Alt-t and type:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Post the output to this forum in "Code" tags. The button that inserts these Code tags is marked </>, which is in the mini toolbar above the edit box where you type your reply.
viewtopic.php?f=42&t=364929

Use Ctrl-Shift-c to copy from the terminal.

I think I was probably doing something wrong and I tried multiple fixes that may have helped me resolve this issue. If someone can confirm which step was the correct fix, please leave a comment so I can close the thread.

1. Because I had tried tinkering with the partition of the drive which was supposed to hold new install, I thought may be I should wipe the drive clean before installing Linux. So I plugged a win11 installer USB and manually deleted all the partitions related to that drive. I quit the windows installer after doing so.
2. For the first 2 install of Linux, I hadn't been creating secure boot password as it was a checkbox and I thought it was an optional step so just in case it was the issue, I created a secure boot password for the new install of Linux.
3. Every time I installed Linux there was prompt called "Perform MOK management" which I did not know anything about and just chose continue boot so for the third install, I searched on the internet what it was and some guy commented in thread that just create a key which you can remember easily so I followed the instructions and enrolled an easy to remember key. After that it booted me into Linux Mint.

you haven't done anything wrong, as such . .

that is an Windows Error

what is happening . . is that the HP Laptop is still looking for it's supplied Windows System
& it can't find it's windows boot-loader . . which you have deleted . .

you also keep getting that "Perform MOK management" issue
- because you have changed the operating environment, to something that the HPs firmware does not recognise.

so - if you press F9 at startup - is there an Linux Boot Menu :?:
OR do you get some other sort of menu :?:

I have got Linux working now but if you could pinpoint the problem, this thread might help something else who faces same issue

I pressed F9 on boot and the boot order shows 2 lines

OS Boot manager (UEFI) - Ubuntu
Boot from EFI

This is WAY outside my area of expertise, so don't put too much faith in what I say.

It probably is not #1.
#2 - possible, but I think no.
#3 - very possible. Even likely. If you could post the link to "some guy commented", others on this list could probably tell you.

now that the MOK management key has been re-assigned,
you should have an working LinuxMint System to use.

that stated error, is the PCs still looking for it's windows system,
and now that you have the LinuxMint System working correctly,
then you now should be good to go.

NB: for some reason - I'm always being HP Laptops & thus I'm somewhat familiar with these errors.
