Cursor movement causes the whole DE to lag.

I'm running MATE edition of Mint on Asus TUF A16 Advantage Edition. The laptop was serviced due to a manufacturing fault, which caused overheating. Previously when first running the system everything except the keyboard worked, and that was easily fixed by updating the kernel. After the warranty service however the system would freeze when loading (specifically right after displaying a few logs, which never caused issues prior to the repair), which I managed to work around by using compatibility mode and then loading from recovery menu once installed. Also the touch pad didn't work at all. Updating the kernel this time fixed both the keyboard and loading issues but moving the cursor now causes lag to the cursor and seemingly the whole desktop environment, complete with a glitchy line along the top of the screen. Curiously, when moving the cursor through the program menu the lag is absent, only the line remains. This applies to both using touch pad and external mouse. In fact when having a mouse pluged in everything except the cursor would eventually freeze.
For context the repair consisted of replacing the motherboard, the cooling assembly and the touchpad, the rest of the machine remains the same. The cursor or the touch pad doesn't seem to cause problems in Windows at all.

I've decided to investigate te hardware and it appears the edge connector of the touchg pad cable has been damaged. One of the pins is literally just peeled back. I have no idea how it's not an issue on windows or even mint's login screen, but I think it's relatively safe to assume that's the issue at play. I will however not close the topic myself untill I can 100% confirm that t be the case so if anyone has any other ideas in the meantime - feel free to share.

Have you upgraded the amdgpu linux-firmware to the latest available? If you would like to try that, instructions are available here.

I have now, but that didn't help and neither did taking care of the touch pad cable. Seemingky the only option I have left with MATE is to switch to software cursor and I think at that point I'll try my luck with Cinnamon and Xfce just to stop going in circles, at least for now.

Only other idea is to try the 6.5 HWE kernel instead of the OEM. I wouldn't really expect that to make a difference, but sometimes it does.

The Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon (Edge) Edition ISO has the 6.5 kernel if you want to try a live session.
