Post by ckonn »

is it true that for several years there has been a process of complete rewriting of programs written in cobol?

Pretty much. Businesses have little alternative but replace their Cobol software because most people that can maintain Cobol code are retired by now and young people don't choose it for their career. If somebody young masters Cobol they can make good money today maintaining somebody's 40+ year old Cobol code but that is only until that software is - by necessity - replaced by something written in another language and then they're left holding the bag: new software is written in other languages so Cobol is a dead end career choice.

COBOL is very much alive. Accenture trained an army of younger COBOL programmers some ten years ago. My friend's son is making good money as a COBOL programmer. They get to travel the world (paid for by the company) as part of their job.

On the other hand, I believe rewriting COBOL programs to almost any language you want is now doable using AI.
