Task Panel Icons on Wrong Side & TOO TINY After 21.3 upgrade

Post by Ysalys »

Upgraded yesterday, and all looked good.
Then booted up laptop this morning, and the task bar icons are way over on the right side, tiny, and cannot be moved to the left side, beside the Menu and Desktop Icons on the left. This is the before and after Upgrade:

If anyone knows the solution PLEASE HELP... this is messing me up royally in my daily work.

Thanks in advance, Kate

When asking for help, always post your system's information:

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane.

Click the Copy button and then paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

No need to use code tags because System Information copy button already inserts the tags when you paste.

The usual way to move items in panel for Cinnamon is by right click empty space on panel > toggle on "panel edit mode" > drag the item to left/middle/right highlighted region > toggle off "panel edit mode".

And in reply to the panel edit mode, yes I have tried that many times, even rebooted to see if it would work, but no good. The icons won't move to the left side again, or be resized. In fact, it seems all my panel settings just don't want to work since upgrading

In Panel edit mode, see if there are any empty launchers on the left (beginning) that are not supposed to be there.

As for the size, you should be able to increase the row height of the panel to get larger icons when in panel edit (I think). I haven't used Cinnamon in years.

Not quite. OP needs to right click on empty portion of panel, choose Panel Settings, adjust font &/or icon size for the left, centre or right portions of the panel
Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon household.
If your issue is solved, please edit your first post in the topic, adding [SOLVED] to the title.

I've opened the panel settings, now many times, and still nothing. I did manage to get the icons to size up, (after the 4th time setting that) to match the panel size, but still not able to move the icons to the left side, or the center. They are stuck on the right side. I've been using Cinnamon for about 10 years now, so the obvious settings and troubleshooting is not my issue. This is something beyond that, and if there's anyone that can help, I would really appreciate it a LOT.
OR, someone who can find this bug, and correct it with a 21.3 update, it would be appreciated, I'm sure, by all who have the same laptop as I do.

Don't have an answer but are you a luddite like me and were you using the "traditional" layout for the panel. Mint dropped this in LM21.3* but you may still have it if you upgraded from an earlier version (as I have). Might be part of the problem or I could be talking rubbish?

Possibly part Luddite, lol but what you say, about 21.3 dropping the traditional panel settings sounds like this issue, but it doesn't make sense that they would still include the panel settings options if the placement choices don't work anymore. I'd be happy if I could just get the icons into the middle of the panel, but all the way to the right just doesn't work for me.
I guess all I can do is hope someone creates an update to fix this... Looks like no-one knows how to fix it, so it could be a bug as I suspect. New version, new bugs. Oh well... So sad...

Let's be more specific.
Q1: Can "panel edit mode" be toggled on or not?
Q2: If yes for Q1, do the subtle highlight regions appear?
Q3: If yes for Q2, when you drag the pinned icons, do they follow your mouse when you are dragging?
Q4: If yes for Q3, can you see mouse cursor change when your mouse reach the next highlight region?

You may also post terminal output of

Code: Select all

gsettings get org.cinnamon enabled-applets
Then maybe we give it a manual gsettings set in accordance to the current value or a gsettings reset for it.
