Cinnamon is crashing (LM 21.2)

Post by yeehawwww »

It has crashed twice in a month now, which never happened before and I don't know why.
The first crash happened when I was using my torrent client, the second happened just now when I was using GIMP.

I checked .xsession-errors and don't know what any of this means, but here's what it said around the time it crashed:

Reason: Moved from Beginner Questions to Desktop:Cinnamon because investigating crashes are unlikely to be "quick and easy to answer".

Other than your system not having the most recent stable BIOS/UEFI, the only thing which caught my eye was some of your swap was being used. That will happen when the system needs it and doesn't later release it (until reboot). Makes me wonder if this issue is somehow related to a resources/memory issue.

The .xsession-error lines you posted seem to be in the midst of the problem which makes it hard to determine what started the problem. It's probably too late to get the earlier information now.

Is there anything showing in System Reports > Crash reports (tab in left column)? That directory gets cleaned out on a weekly basis so it may or may not have information right now. Should Cinnamon crash again, you will want to check there.

I saved this crash log with a few more lines, these were directly above what I posted in the OP:

There's a Steam crash report from yesterday but I don't think it's related.

Those are all warnings and not errors. I don't know if the window codes relate to GIMP or something else.

Might have to wait until it happens again and then check System Reports for Crash reports unless someone else has some ideas.

That is Cinnamon crashing. I wasn't sure if maybe something else was crashing which caused Cinnamon to crash which is why I wanted you to check there.

Crash reports are not usually something I can do much with due to my limited knowledge in reading them (and my very limited knowledge of the underlying code). However, I must say it appears you had a LOT opened when this happened. That is a longer list than I am used to seeing in the first part. Additionally, the crash log is 27.9M which I believe is larger than can be uploaded to GitHub so a developer could even check it.

The first part indicated this was an ABRT (abort) which means it was a condition which was anticipated to possibly happen and a "safe off-ramp" (a properly handled crash) was created rather than causing a seg fault (an unhandled crashed).

One of the issues with Cinnamon crashes is being able to reliably reproduce them which I'm presuming you are not able to do. Was this a time you were using GIMP?

It crashed when I was adding a torrent to my torrent client, qBittorrent, like the first time. Rarely happens and is hard to reproduce. What I had open was qBittorrent, Firefox, Steam and Nemo. I have those open right now and my RAM usage is 3.5GB/16.7GB so it doesn't seem excessive. My swap right now is 1.1GB/2GB, don't know if that's normal.

I've noticed on my laptop if my swap gets high it is usually because the RAM filled. RAM will then go back down, but swap may stay up. I've always presumed if swap was high (yours is more than 50%) then the system must have been full at one point, but I could be wrong with that assumption.

Cinnamon has a setting for at what point memory restarts which for me in LM20.3 is in the General app.

Total wild guess, but maybe upping that memory limit might help?

I did find this open bug Crashes often on mouse manipulations between active menus #11950. I don't know if your is more likely to happen if you are doing fast mouse manipulations. There are a number of random crash bug reports so hard to know what might be similar to yours.

Yeah..that swappiness is still set to 60 or possibly higher...

I recommend you lower the swap number down to around 15 or lower. The higher the number..the more often the system will want to make use of swap space..even if you're not consuming all of your ram.

Here is how you change your swappiness value. run the following commands in terminal ( note..you can replace " nano" with whatever text editor you prefer )

sudo nano /etc/sysctl.conf
then add the following info below in the bottom of that text file
vm.swappiness = 15
save the file
then .. sudo sysctl -p

Restart the system to finish.
Mint 21.2 Cinnamon 5.8.4
