[FIXED] Bug with lock screen/screensaver, sometimes showing black screen only

Post by ss2000 »

I noticed that after updating to Mint 21.3 (Cinnamon), instead of showing the normal lock screen when locking the computer, sometimes a black screen shows with only the cursor visible. No blank for entering the password is visible like it should be, only the black screen. It is still possible to unlock the computer from this state by entering the password, although it is not possible to see where it is being typed. This does not happen every time the computer is locked, only sometimes. Is this a known bug with the new Cinnamon, or a different issue?

I am not sure if this is relevant, but these messages appeared in my system logs around the time I experienced the issue:
5:27:16 PM cinnamon-sessio: WARNING: t+4058.00131s: Detected that screensaver has appeared on the bus

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware. It's possible something like this might be related to the graphics so we need to know more about your hardware.

I think this may be a known bug which has been around for a while Black screen when locked, no log in prompt present #424. Although I think those people were getting it all the time. I don't know if the fact you have a dual-GPU computer might be why you are only seeing it some of the time. Or maybe something in the posts in that report might give you ideas of why it might only be happening some of the time.

After digging through that thread and others, I found a lot of similarities between my problem and that experienced by others, but still no solution that worked. I also found that:
- The problem only occurs when locking the screen while no windows are visible, either none are open or all are minimized. In this situation, the issue occurs every time. Locking the screen with visible windows open always results in the normal lock screen being shown. This is why I originally noted that it only happened sometimes, I had tried in both of these situations but not made the connection yet.

-The issue does not occur when my screen scaling is set to 100%, under any circumstances. My scaling is normally set to 200%, since the screen's high resolution leads to everything being extremely small at 100% (so leaving it at 100% is not a viable option).

- I do NOT have fractional scaling turned on, having it turned on seemed to be the cause of the issue for multiple other people

I've had precisely the same problem, but unlike other cases, mine happens on a desktop PC, not a laptop. I can confirm it doesn't happen at 100% zoom, but I've also got a hi-res monitor and use 200% (The Setting Formerly Known As HiDPI). The mouse pointer still works (though it only reappears with mouse movement or keypress), and carefully typing my password brings the desktop back with no symptoms.

By coincidence, my upgrade to Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon happened just before I upgraded CPU/mobo, and it's happened the same with both setups, but I use the same graphics card (Nvidia 2080Ti) connected via DisplayPort cable to the same monitor, and the same Linux Mint installation (on an NVMe) rather than a fresh installation.

Some additional info regarding symptoms:
  • It happens regardless of whether there are any windows showing on other workspaces (I use all four), only if they're all minimised on the current workspace.
  • It happens on both recent Linux kernels (6.5 and 6.2) regardless of which one I choose during startup.
  • Sometimes the lock screen comes back up of its own accord if I've been away for less than 30 minutes.
  • Simply turning the monitor off and on again brings the lock screen back instantly, but with the password entry box already showing, even if I'm careful not to nudge the mouse or touch the keyboard.
I can provide some journalctl excerpts if needed, but my current specs are:

Re: Bug with lock screen/screensaver, sometimes showing black screen only

I did some searching and it seems like this may not be the issue I linked earlier, but this one Screen lock - only black screen and mouse cursor #450. I think the developers are working on a fix but I have no idea of timing.

I found a fix that works, at least until the devs fix the root of the problem. Create a shell script containing the commands:

Code: Select all

killall cinnamon-screensaver
cinnamon-screensaver --no-fallback --hold
While this command is running, the problem does not occur. Adding the script to the startup applications fixes the problem.

Thanks for the feedback. It's likely the --no-fallback is the key part.

The --hold argument is necessary or else the command will exit on its own after 30 seconds. The --debug argument is not necessary though, I originally copied the command from the first Github thread you linked but apparently --debug is only there to show debug info while the command is running

Just got an update to cinnamon-screensaver that fixed the problem, the startup script is no longer necessary. Thanks to everyone for the help!
