Can't logout since update to 21.3

As soon as I saw the ability to update to the 21.3 Cinnamon using the normal update manager I ran it. The process didn't give any indication of problems.

However, since the update I've had issues where I could not logout or switch users. This PC is setup with dual monitors and is very convenient to be shared by my wife and myself. That process has worked well until the recent upgrade to 21.3. At times when clicking on the Menu button, followed by either clicking on the logout or power button, no other pop-up occurs so you can't continue the logout or shutdown process.

You can reboot from the terminal but that is not ideal. This generally happens as the number of times of logging out or switching users is done. It works initially, but after several times it no longer gives you the options.

This seems to work the same on both Default and Wayland. I'm back to the Default for now until this is resolved.

I'm having the save issue after switching to Mint 21.3.

When I switch user from a non root account then tried to logout of the root account, nothing happens.

I press Logout (Leave the session) button. The Session windows does not appear. The working around is to do CTL-ATL-L to go back to the root account, but this will leave the root account open, or restart Mint.

There is a known issue in LM21.3 of not being able to logout when switching users in LM21.3. It's related to the changes to prep for Wayland, but it also affected X11 sessions. Please see this post for the bug report and the posts prior to it for other users having an issue. The developers are aware of it and working on a fix.
