SD (Secure Digital) card reader will not find, nor mount.

Post by _HG_ »

I use Linux Mint 8
SD (Secure Digital) card reader will not find, nor mount, the SD card.
CF (Compact Flash) cards are found and mounted with no problem at all.
The reader is USB connected and accept 4 different kind of cards.

How can I make Mint (or Ubuntu) find and mount my SD cards ?

The obvious question here is can you plug your card reader into another PC and read the same SD card on that? FWIW I can insert SD cards into the (built in) card reader on my laptop running Helena and they mount without me having to do anything.

It is a Multi-Card Reader, that looks just like this one:Image
So, it is mounted in the computer and connected internally with an USB cable.
I have not used the reader in any other computer, so I don't know if the problem would occur there.

If I put a CF-card in the reader, then it is detected, mounted and read with no problem at all.

I just found a mysterious behaviour:
If I put an SD-card (Kingston 4GB) in the reader, then the problem occur, i.e. it is not detected, nor mounted.
If I put another SD-card with a lot less capacity (Panasonic 16MB), then that one is detected and mounted.
It is the Kingston 4GB card I referred to when I started this topic.
The SD-card is used in a Nikon Coolpix L15 and I can get the pictures from the camera with an USB cable from the camera to the computer but if I move the SD-card from the camera into the slot of the reader, then the problem occur.

HG, how is the 4Gb SD card formatted, IOW which filing system does it use?

It is formatted in the camera and I don't know what file system the camera use.
It is unknown to me how the 16MB card was formatted in the first place, but I just formatted it in the camera and now that card can not be detected either.
So, maybe it has to do with the camera file system.
But, the CF-card that works perfectly well, is formatted in another Nikon camera, and I guess they use the same file system.
And, after all, that is the normal way it works. I mean that the card is formatted in the camera, so the operating system should really be able to handle it.

HG, been doing a little googling and it seems some users are having similar problems with SD cards in USB readers and the latest version of ubuntu on which Helena is based. Can you put the SD card in the reader, then open a terminal window and enter dmesg | tail, then afterwards enter sudo fdisk -l (lowercase L), and post the outputs back here.

The SD-card capacity seams to matter.
After booting the computer normally, then i could insert the 16MB card and it was detected and mounted correctly, but the 4GB card was not.
If I, after a new reboot, insert the 4GB card it is not detected, nor mounted. And then not the 16MB card either.
As if the first SD-card that is inserted sets the behavior of how the computer will detect all SD-cards.
The dmesg | tail command output was the same after changing SD-card and repeted the command.
So, this is the result with the 4GB SD-card in the reader:

~ $ dmesg | tail
[ 20.982903] CPU1 attaching sched-domain:
[ 20.982905] domain 0: span 0-1 level MC

~ $ sudo fdisk -l

/dev/sda5 59578 60801 9831748+ 82 Linux växling / Solaris

Now I will reboot and repeat the procedure with the 16MB card.

Sure it's not a newer SDHC card and the reader isn't SDHC compatible?

ej64 might have a point. The output from dmesg indicates the 4GB card is just not being detected, which may indicate a problem with the card reader reading that particular card and not a Mint problem. Guess the only way to be certain is to try it with a different OS, perhaps in a different PC? According to some of the threads I have read on this, some users have had success by booting with the reader unplugged then plugging in once logged in, but given it's an internal device, I can't recommend this. Since USB readers are quite cheap, your best bet might be to buy another reader. Good luck, let us know if you get it working so other users can benefit.
