There may be a java version of UltraVNC which then would be OS independent

Not sure if that one can use encryption
And I found these two

I have been using VNC to connect to my Windows machine, but found it to be a bit slow and laggy... I did a little research and found a small tool called rdesktop. It allows you to connect to Windows machine without installing any additional servers on it - it connects as if you were using Windows`s native Remote Desktop Connection. It is much faster than VNC. I didn`t install any gui for it (although there is a KDE gui client, called krdesktop).

From Wikipedia:
Features

* 128-bit encryption, using the RC4 encryption algorithm.[2] (this is the default security; older clients may use encryption of lesser strength). But because of the man-in-the-middle vulnerability in pre-version 6.0 implementations, in many circumstances the traffic can be decrypted along the way.[3]
