To remove the desktop items go to settings, desktop settings, behavoir tab, remove ticks from show icons at the bottom of the tab.

And.... how do you add them? Specifically I want to add Firefox to the desktop...
Oh and is there a manual like the Main edition available?
As the differences between XFCE & Gnome are plenty...

There is an app under Accessories that list all apps installed.
Open it and Drag the Firefox icon to the Desktop.(haven't teste for desktop only panel launcher)
Or you could open thunar and got to /usr/share/applications
Right Click the Firefox launcher and Send To Desktop.
Right Click Delete to remove it.
