i guess this is a common problem for newcomers.
I my windows crashed on my new notebook (Asus K50lJ). I was pretty pissed off, so I installed Debian, but sound & wireless didn't worked. So I tried linux mint. now my i see my wireless, but the sound is still missing.
since i read some other poses with this problem, i know, nothing is muted and everything is on 100 in the alsamixer.
and btw the big return button doesn't work (probably just some little box i have to check, but i don't know where
