Why use linux

I have been a widows user from the day I used a computer. I have been using both windows and linux for about a year. There are linux distributions like ubuntu and mint which have grown up preety well to be easy to use for general users. I am an IT student and an IT professional. People there at my office recommends me to learn linux as they are run in most of the servers. But I don't know in detail why except they wont get infected by virus. A task which completes in just 2 3 clicks in windows becomes complex to do in linux.
Why should we we use linux from a general user prespective and an IT professional prespective?

Name any taks which take more time in lInux than under Windows.

Better stability, better security, better system right management, lesser virus/malware risks. lesser costs... shall i continue?

HMM Pranishres I am also using Windows from the day first, I have also taken 2 month linux classes back in 2005 but honestly i found it difficult to learn. I dont know why i feel windows at ease.

If you are a IT pro, Windows brings money for you, because Windows is difficult and multi-problematic, so average user cannot survive with Windows..

Linuxes just are working, which do not give the big money for IT pro..

Why use Linux? Why not? If you are not a gamer and you don't need software that is made just for Windows, then you are wasting money on Windows licence (which is not cheap) and you are risking infections from many malware and virus programs that don't work in Linux (some do, but a lot of them don't). A lot of people I know use Windows just because they never tried anything else and don't want to try anything else purely because of their ignorance. Some use pirated versions of Windows, some pay for Windows licence and they all come to me for help when something goes wrong (mostly adware problems for clicking on wrong links and visiting wrong sites or if some "smart" friend of theirs activates updates because "those are important" and Windows realises it's not genuine). Most of them are using their PCs for YouTube, Facebook and surfing the web, which works fine in Linux. Basically, if they were using Linux, they would have less problems with their PCs and I would have less problems with their "lack of knowledge" (if you know what I mean). Linux does everything I need my PC to do, so using Windows would be pointless for me. Linux runs faster, it uses less resources, I can use it on an older PC and, best of all, it's free. Sure, you can buy a PC with Windows already installed on it and think you didn't pay for it, but you did. The price of the licence is included in the price of the PC.

If these people recommend you to learn Linux due to the reason they are running Linux on their server(s), learn that bl**** crap! They have good reasons for running Linux and as long you're too stubborn and too much of a windows fanboy you'll get in problems on your job!

You are a 'professional' and a 'student' and you get 'recommendation to learn linux'?

There is no definitive answer as to why to use Linux. It is completely subjective. There are as many reasons to use Linux as there are to use Windows and vice-versa.

At some point you have to decide what is important to you. What it is that makes a difference to you. Is it security, is it community, is it gaming, is it corporate support, is it cost.. this list goes on and on as well. Once you decide on those things, you pick the computing environment that fits those important things to you.

We can all tell you why WE chose Linux, the task for you is to decide why YOU should want or not to use Linux.

I generally find that even if you tell a Windows user that Linux is dead easy to use, can do real work in the real world, etc, etc, they do not believe you. The idea that Linux is a big bulky operating system for huge servers controlled by an super IT specialist typing commands on a terminal is so well embedded in the public consciousness that words absolutely cannot shift the vision.

From a career advancement perspective, learning Linux system administration is very marketable right now. MS Server 20xx admins are a dime a dozen nowadays. Linux administration experience tells an IT executive that a potential employee is willing to delve deeper into a problem and come up with a novel solution. Linux admin skills may just give you the edge in job security too, as IT departments are often the first "cost reduction" targets in a struggling company.

From a server maintenance perspective, Linux servers can be configured quite easily to load and run the absolute minimum processes necessary for their business function. MS Server configurations, like their consumer-grade OS counterparts, often have a bit of bloat by default.

It's free. Paying for a windows key when your just going to browse the web and check your email, and maybe do a little office work, is silly.

as noted above each of us has our own reasons for preferring Linux.

In my view Linux is a properly designed O/S, implementing storage protection properly, as well as file permissions, privileged operations protected, as well as normally running users properly under their own permissions and without root access.

Open Source / Free software: In Linux I don't have to pay, pay and pay again for stuff that's missing.

Control: The Linux computer does what I tell it and doesn't keep itself busy doing whatever.

Linux is what a user system should be. It seems an awful lot of people feel this way.
