i've been linux-only for over 4 years, but i left Windows 8.1 on my 8 month old laptop, i saw no reason to disrupt anything. i figured i would get familiar with Windows 10, just for the sake of knowledge that might be needed, not because i have any intention of using it. i made use of the free upgrade today, so i could image it and then forget it. i have a bad crashing problem with linux, its the only reason i might have to switch back some day.
i decided to tidy the disk, so i got to work:
* backed-up my files to usual external storage and SpiderOak online.
* burned the previously downloaded Windows 10.
* booted linux usb, used dd to image my system, and my backup system, i already had an image of Windows - all to an external disk.
* upgraded to Windows 10, which took an hour and 20 minutes, no issues. then sorted security and privacy settings etc. this step took me a while, but i didnt want to rush myself.
* i checked Windows had activated, and imaged it using the native tool.
* booted linux usb, deleted all partitions except for EFI (ESP).
* created partitions for swap, and the 2 systems. restored my systems in 13 minutes using dd. opened gparted to 'check' them which grows filesystems to fill partitions.
* manually installed grub boot loader.
* happily booted to my desktop, no obvious issues.
* copied Windows images from external disk to another partition on internal disk, so its in 2 places. made sure to change mount setting so it doesnt load at startup.
* setup swap association.
i think thats everything.
