I wonder what to put on this...

Post by RacerBG »

A friend of mine will give me as a gift one IBM Thinkpad T23. I even don't know how old is this beast. It's original OS was Windows 98 SE. It now runs Windows 2000 SP4 and it's very well preserved! But the real question is what Linux distro to throw at it? Linux Mint is a NO go!

This laptop have Pentium III-M 1.0 GHz CPU
S3 SuperSavage IX/C with 16 MB video memory
512 MB RAM
15 GB HDD

For full overview here it is: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T23

I'm looking forward to Debian Squeeze with Gnome 2.30 as a safe bet but I could be adventurer and install Debian Jessie with some WM for example. What are your suggestions?

antiX would probably do nicely.

The T23 was first released in July 2001. They were real work horses, and were a viable laptop for several years after. I've owned probably half a dozen of them in the past, and still have one, but it is in need of several parts to be functional again.

Why would you want to spend any time on such an old machine anyway?

HI RacerBG,

You might be able to get Linux Mint Xfce (32-bit) to run on this, or "peppermint 6", or "Puppy Linux", etc...

Thank you everyone for the suggestions! :)

Nel Edmond, thank you for the information. If this one was released 14 years ago I can see why it was a viable option. 512 MB RAM was a hell lot of memory!

MartyMint, it's better to revive it and use it for minor tasks than throw it outside, right?

phd21, I really wonder about Xfce, the CPU is slow, the RAM is fine but... Something like CrunchBang++ or antiX sounds better.

I have almost similar computer. 20Gb HDD, 512 RAM, 1,2GHZ CPU, 128Mb GPU.
Once I installed Bodhi Linux with Elightentment DE. It's works and works almost everything well. Except (mean not well and not everything) flash videos (youtube for example) and different HD videos.
Windows assumes I'm stupid but Linux demands proof of it

Arch! (Or even Gentoo if you have the time and patience.) :D
That way there is nothing unnecessary onboard to slow the system down.

I have no problems with Arch but I haven't got patience to configure every single bit of it. About Gentoo - it's a little complicated for me. :P

A big +1 in favour of Vector Linux. Quite a while ago I installed it on an old P3-850 desktop w/384GB RAM for a friend, and the only issue was finding the right driver for his Creative sound card.
