disquieting news about sourceforge?

Post by oldgranola »

Ran across a couple of articles accusing Sourceforge of taking over open source project mirror accounts and in the case of GIMP-win, wrapping the installer with crapware/addware. Is this a problem? Did similar for its mirrors of a number of other common programs.

I only download WinTendo archives from there on hosts I can afford to re-image every now and then.
They've been wrapping for better than a year'ish...

They made a mess with their attempt at damage control. GIMP for Windows is downloaded from gimp.org or one of its official mirrors. SourceForge hijacked ownership of the old project page on SourceForge, set it up as an unofficial mirror, and wrapped it with an adware installer (as I understood it). All with the reasoning that this somehow serves the GIMP for Windows users that otherwise wouldn't find updates. Really? How about redirecting from sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-win/ to gimp.org, or putting a notice up "this project space has been retired, the project is now found at [somewhere else]". I guess they earn some bucks for each person that installs the adware.

Sad day indeed. I used to trust them and now I will be hesitant to get anything from them. Once you go to the dark side like this, it is usually a downward spiral unless someone really puts on the brakes and turns it around.

This story has been out for more than 1 year. I'm surprised people still discover it today. :|

LinuxQuestions.org has a good interview with Roberto Galoppini of SourceForge: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... 175547335/

Last month, I started this thread

At least LM does not use SF. LL, which is on my laptop, does - I'm debating about switching distro.
