They have been trying to change the way the public views them. They want you to think they have changed their ways and are not all about suing all their competition. If they really want to change pubic opinion they should stop making their competitors pay the Microsoft tax on Android devices. Building better products and competing using ethical practices would change how most of us view Microsoft.

Nothing wrong with selling software at all, just do it in a ethical manor.

in this country - we have to pay the "Australia Tax" on top of that "Microsoft Tax". ..
- which makes all imported IT products - more expensive.

And - they won't pay their share of the Corporate Tax:

and yet people will still buy their products. ..

1. Embrace.
2. Extend
3. Extinguish.

For Docker and Visual Studio we are now at step 1.

Phoronix tried it out and has a summary with screenshots: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n ... o-Code-IDE
Tidbits at the end of earlier news: Microsoft is partially open sourcing .NET and Visual Studio 2015 will support building Linux binaries (e.g., from Windows). Microsoft also announced yesterday .NET Core runtime for Linux.

The Visual Studio Core IDE is closed source but apparently based on open source programs (not GPL! so Microsoft can use the code without contributing changes back to the community). It's reported to be using https://atom.io/ and various extensions for that. Adobe with https://brackets.io/ shows Microsoft how it should be done: open source and welcoming community contributions and contributing to other open source projects yourself.

It's perhaps interesting for those that want to develop in .NET with C#. It's useless for other programming languages. The website is down right now so I couldn't see more, but from reports the IDE doesn't have an edge over others (and, only supporting C# fully in the editor).

Regardless of that, all this news just reinforces how wide-spread and important Linux has become 8)

It's on us to remain vigilant and remember it's GNU/Linux we want: if you can trust your operating system and its libraries (e.g., .NET Core), we're back to square one... Microsoft hasn't fully open sourced .NET so any programs using it, even if those programs are open source, can't be trusted. Like other proprietary programs (Steam, Skype, Google Chrome) it's up to each user in how far they will trust a program they have no control over.

It really all comes down to this, Microsoft has made so many mistakes that the public is no longer ignoring things. People like us, large corporations and even governments are looking at alternatives to Microsoft products. Android and Apple dominate the mobile market, no one is really interested in Microsoft's offerings in this area. Microsoft has become a company that is known for suing it's competition to make money instead of being a company that makes quality products.

Apple, Red Hat, Ubuntu, Google and plenty of others are now being looked at much more seriously as an alternative to using Microsoft products. It's not just about money, it's about quality and ethics. Microsoft's constant law suits in no way make their products any better. Canonical and Steam are really putting pressure on Microsoft too. Canonical gets a lot of press and their recent success with their cell phone venture is building them a good reputation.

Large corporations are turning to Ubuntu and Red Hat to meet their needs. These companies have responded well by offering a long length of support and improved quality. China and Germany have made headlines by switching over to Linux and open source solutions and it is just a matter of time before the rest of the world follows suit. The global economy certainly has some influence on things too.

Microsoft can no longer simply buy out it's competition any more although they do try. Brand recognition is not really helping Microsoft to the degree it used to. Canonical however is gaining quickly in this area. Steam will soon be amongst Microsoft's competitors in the gaming field, they too have had some very positive press and often sell games at more competitive price.

The world is changing and either Microsoft will change with it or be left behind. They know they have to change the way the world sees them and they have a lot of damage control on their hands! Microsoft did not used to offer public previews of their upcoming operating systems, only people with a TechNet account had access to test builds. Now the public has access to these. Is it a coincidence? Hardly! They want YOU to THINK you have a voice and that they are listening to you!

Does Microsoft care about Linux users? No, we are a huge threat to their monopoly! They are only interested in persuading us to buy their on-line versions of software. Microsoft has no choice but to try and change how the world views them if they are to survive, they finally see the writing on the wall. The reality is that they need to make better products, use ethical business practices and change pubic opinion. All we are seeing right now is the Microsoft PR machine in action.
