Hi!

Today is the target release date for the Debian 8 Jessie, the new stable version.

First of all, we're planning to release Jessie as Debian 8 this coming
Saturday (25th April).

Stay tuned for more :D

Congrats to the Debian team!
I'm on Sid so I suppose I can expect a lot of upgrading soon. :)

I've been running it (rc) for a few weeks and it works great. No interesting updates so far today.

Just read the developer's announcement as linked in the OP. Very interesting news, especially for us iMac fans-- there are significant advances concerning EFI booting. Who knows... this may eventually make it down to us Mint users too, especially LMDE.

Finally I can marry my PC again with Jessie. But this time - as stable release. Well done, Debian team! 8)

LTS is good, but we have LMDE2 (problem: doesn't have Xfce, my preferred DE). Debian on his side, insist to present Gnome 3 as the default DE (why not Mate, or Xfce?).

In general, Debian is OK (stable, fast, useful, user-friendly, funny...) but compared to Ubuntu-based distros the lack of PPA is really annoying.
Active Distros in my computers: LM21.1 (Mate,Xfce); MXLinux (Xfce)

I'm wondering if Wheezy will be supported as Oldstable the way that squeeze was? I looked on the Debian page but couldn't see any indication that it was.
There again, the Debian website is huge...

Debian is all about stability and heavily tested packages. There is talk about ppa repos but for now it is just a proposal. Debian made the choice of Gnome Shell as the default because of it's accessibility features, they wanted everyone to be able to use the release. You can do a minimal install and install any DE you like. Also, you can choose a different DE using the net install images. I saw Live images posted on Softpedia with a variety of DE's too.

As far as Jesse being an LTS release, I think there has been no final decision made yet.

Decision is not made yet. It depends on the success of Squeeze-LTS and also on resources the team get (manpower or money).
They have one more year to take a decision.
