When Linux (Mint) isn't the answer...

Post by MartyMint »

I suppose for someone coming off a catastrophic disaster with Windows, steering someone into a totally new operating system might not be suitable.
Especially if it's "user error" related, owing to poor computing habits, lack of backup, understanding basics...etc...They'll likely end up turning their Windows bad habits into Linux bad habits.

Just an observation.

For that kind of people a Chromebook is ideal. Still Linux....

It's all depends on what do you meqn catastrophic disaster. If it means full crush and data loss, it is a disaster, but with proper setup and user management you can prevent it even in windows, but linux is better suited for that. You see in windows running as an admin user is a norm, where in linux it's almost impossible. If all they do is using the net, linux will be a safer alternative as it is way too difficult to crush or infect.

And why? Because Chromebooks are little more than portable versions of Internet appliances. Remember those? Probably not, because they flopped miserably. Still, there are those who do nothing but use the 'Net. These users expect the machines that deliver the 'Net to them to "just work" like any other appliance in their home, with no (or very minimal) fuss, for years-- even decades, thanks to XP's longevity.

Of course, they rarely realize the inherently ephemeral nature of the Internet itself.

Not quite. The inclusion of a keyboard moves them just beyond "upgraded tablet".

that is, to say, that they are the type who installs, just about anything, onto their Windows PC.
and then transfers that attitude onto any Linux PC, that they get to use.

- with similar, catastrophic results. ..

Using a PC regardless of the OS isn't the answer for some people. Straight jackets and slingshot feedings are sometimes the only answer.

Is this for a computer-illiterate senior? If so, consider Wow computer.

Been there, done that, didn't sell all that well. This is a touch-screen, WiFi version of the "Internet Appliance" circa 2000 that I mentioned earlier in the thread.
One of the most (in)famous such Internet appliances, 3Com's Aubrey, looked like this:

The Aubrey had no way to add programs and no internal storage; unless you were online (at 56K dialup speeds), it was truly functionless-- just like Chromebooks.

(I must give props, though, to the WOW Computer makers for building on Linux and providing a way to play DVDs/CDs and edit offline documents.)

You've obviously never used a Chromebook.
