Best video card to upgrade to

Post by andyO »

Hiyer,

So I'm upgrading a dell inspiron 531, rather than forking out for a new machine, and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for the best video card I could get that'll work well with Mint 17.1?

The new specs will be:
AMD Athon x2 5000+
4GB RAM
530W power supply

I'd like to do a little gaming, although my preference is for turn based strategy games, so I'd like a decent card. Although I'm guessing that the processor wont be able to cope with the more swanky cards available. I'm not too knowledgeable about video card hardware so I thought it was worth asking to see if anyone can offer some wisdom.

Thanks!

Two rules of thumb:

1. Buy Nvidia, not ATI/AMD. Reason: the closed non-free Linux drivers from Nvidia are usually a lot better than those from ATI/AMD.

2. Don't buy the latest video card model, but one that's already on the market for some time. Reason: then the Nvidia driver in the repo's of Mint 17.x probably won't be too old.

So, With the above already said I use a GTX 650 from Asus and it does everything I need. I even put one in my Mythtv box. Its well supported and never has an issue.

If you get one of those then you will be just fine probably for years to come.
