i use linuxmint 17.1 mate 64bit and start trek dvd for personal and domestic use
result with
dvdbackup command line utility: after 5 hours the ripping process create a folder of 30gb of files but works...
makemkv: the program is not free i don' t like it but works great and is faster
handbrake: i think is the best choice...slow but free/open and nice gui/// is not a ripper but it is a transcoder
others like dd or brasero or i think k9 or dvdrip are not good for hard protection.
Open with vlc your dvd a check the number of the title that is not always 1 but perhaps another number
now in handbrake check if the title number is correct
for the codec you can use mpeg2 to 4 to 1 with costant quality and constant framerate for speed up and audio auto passtrough
if you have a very good pc use h264
(if you have a dvd with hard protection leave vlc opened in pause and use handbrake maybe works)
the solution for linux is upgrade and support HANDBRAKE please,
thanks and god save linuxmint.
